Honda and Nissan join forces to improve the hardware and software of their new cars

Nissan and Renault have signed an agreement under which they will begin working together on the development of key elements of the new models of both brands.

A year ago, Honda and Nissan tried to embark on a joint path, but it did not work out. The attempted merger failed, and the two companies decided to continue on their separate paths. But the fact that they have not merged does not mean that the relationship has ended between them. The joint projects will continue, but independently and focused on specific products.

In principle, one of the first projects put on the table has been the development of an electronic control system, the ECUs, so that both brands can use the same one. In this way, the same hardware, but also the same software will be found, such as the operating system and other key components.

In this way, the cost of vehicles from both brands will be reduced and progress will be made more effectively in the development of new solutions. It has not been made public what this project consists of in its entirety, but it is known that work is already underway and it is expected that the new developments will be ready for commercialisation between 2028 and 2029.

Obviously, although it is the same technology team, each brand is expected to have small changes in the software to differentiate each model.

With this joint project, both brands will take advantage of the combined engineering experience and development resources to improve efficiency, accelerate innovation and increase competitiveness by reducing development costs and achieving greater economies of scale. This means that development cycles will be faster and can be adapted to the needs of drivers.

In addition, the agreement is not limited to this control unit system, but it is expected that work will be done on other elements so that they adapt to the models of both brands. As a curiosity, it should be noted that this agreement does not include the large alliance Nissan-Renault-Mitsubishi, although the latter is interested in participating in the joint development of this system.
