A study has revealed that most drivers do not know how adaptive cruise control works.

As with everything, there can always be a gap between beliefs and realities. Now, according to a study, drivers don’t quite understand the functioning of the adaptive cruise control system. Users who have this assistant do not know how it works and trust that it will function correctly. This can cause accidents, since drivers think the system will work when it does not.

The study also found that some drivers thought the system would react or stop in front of a stationary object in their lane, such as construction cones or other obstacles. Other users also believed the system would provide steering inputs that could keep them in their lane, when in fact that is a different system. Others were inclined to believe the system was safe in all weather conditions, which is also not true.

Gene LaDoucer, AAA’s regional director of public affairs, said that “this research suggests that current vehicle technology requires learning in order to master it.” “You can’t ‘fake it until you make it’ at highway speeds. New car owners should receive training that is safe, effective, and pleasant before putting it into use on the road“.

Although drivers often become disillusioned with these notions as they use the system and gain a greater appreciation of the limitations of the ACC system, they still do not reach the same level of understanding as drivers who were given brief but thorough instructions on how to use the system. Worse still, however, despite not fully understanding how the system worked, some of the drivers who had no training were very sure that they knew how it worked.

If you don’t want to belong to that subset of people, the organization that developed the study recommends following its Plan. That means knowing the Purpose of driver-assistance technologies, the Limitations these systems have, Allowing yourself time to practice, and Never relying solely on assistance systems. Before heading out on the road and fully trusting driver-assistance systems, ask the brand to give you training on their use in normal, real-world conditions.
