If there weren't enough SUVs already, the new Volkswagen Tiguan X Coupé is paving its way into production

As unlikely as it may seem, there is room in the existing SUV lineup for new variants, as is the case of the future Volkswagen Tiguan X Coupé.

For example, the Volkswagen T-Roc cabrio showed us this: the “chicer” version of the urban crossover, which adopted a convertible configuration that, although other relatively comparable models such as the Range Rover Evoque convertible were discontinued, the German brand dared to put on the market, given that the voracious appetite of a clientele eager for new solutions within a body style that seems to have no limits for the imagination of design teams would make it a success.

On the other hand, the adoption of more streamlined bodies, inspired by coupé sports cars, has given rise to a new generation of SUVs with infinitely elongated rear pillars and a roofline that is as sharp as it is difficult to digest for the more traditionalists.

A new model will join this latter group, where the reference is the Porsche Cayenne Coupé, the SUV pioneer that arrived last at the banquet of coupé aesthetics. In 2019 it added the body style that others had already adopted earlier, such as the Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupé or, at more or less the same time, the Audi Q3 Sportback. The new member of the SUV coupé group will be the Volkswagen Tiguan X Coupé.

Thus, from the B-pillar forward, this crossover replicates the look of the Volkswagen Tiguan we know, but from this vertical axis toward the rear, the car adopts a roofline typical of a saloon with a coupé-inspired profile, as is the case of the discontinued Volkswagen Passat CC or, currently, the flagship of the sedans, the Volkswagen Arteon.

Likewise, this car has aesthetic similarities with other SUVs from the same manufacturer already seen, starting with the prototype of the Volkswagen SUV Coupé Concept that heads this article and was presented in 2019 at the Shanghai Motor Show, as well as its production version, the Volkswagen Tayron X, the coupé variant of the Volkswagen Tayron, the “Chinese cousin” of the Volkswagen Tiguan, intended for the local market, considering it also bears a significant resemblance to the recently spotted prototype of the so-called Volkswagen ID.4 GTX, the coupé version of the Volkswagen ID.4 itself.
