If your driving licence expires during the state of alarm, don't worry: the DGT extends its validity.
Under the state of alarm, many basic services are not operating, so in cases such as renewing a driving licence an extension of the deadline is expected.

We are in the midst of a state of alarm in which all services have been suspended or reduced. So you may run into an unexpected problem. We have already explained how you can wait for the state of alarm to end before getting your MOT, since the testing stations are closed too. But you may find that your driving licence has expired, so you urgently need to renew it.
As with the MOT, we find that the medical examination centres, which are responsible for assessing drivers, also remain closed and cannot be visited. Luckily, since the country is in an exceptional situation, the deadlines for renewing the driving licence have also been extended.

Driving licence expired during the state of alarm
The driving licence is the document that allows us to drive a vehicle and is required to get behind the wheel. To renew it, you must pass a medical examination carried out at approved medical centres. In addition to certifying the physical fitness needed to drive§h20# the type of vehicle covered by each licence category, you must also complete a short skills test.
Once all of this is passed, the same medical centre carries out the licence renewal, without the need to go to the Traffic Headquarters. At that same centre the new driving licence is printed with the new expiry date. The lack of medical centres during the state of alarm makes it impossible to carry out these tests.
But if your driving licence expires while the state of alarm is in force, you can drive with peace of mind. The government has set a 60-day period after the end of this exceptional state to renew the licence. This means that, counting from the last day of the state of alarm, which is currently set until 24 May.
In other words, at present you could drive with an expired licence until 27 July. From that day on, the holder of the licence may be reported. That said, this only applies to drivers whose licence expires between the first day of the state of alarm, 14 March, and 24 May. If the licence expires on 25 May, this measure will no longer apply.
So make sure to book an appointment at a medical centre as soon as possible for the medical examination and renew the driving licence as soon as you can, to avoid problems and scares once the state of alarm ends and we enter the so-called “new normality”.
