Ineos throws in the towel: it sees no functionality in its hydrogen off-roader

Ineos has arrived on the market with a very interesting proposal. An off-roader that aims to occupy its place in this exclusive range, with a vehicle designed to move freely over the most difficult terrain without giving up any comfort. Fairly basic vehicles, but very functional. The brand is considering launching new models, including an electric variant of the model. But one variant has been ruled out. At least for now.

The hydrogen-powered Ineos Grenadier has been left out of the company’s plans. The company believes it is the most suitable zero-emission model for everyday driving. But its development plans for a model of this kind have been interrupted by an overwhelming reality.

The main problem for the hydrogen Ineos

The main obstacle facing Ineos Automotive is the lack of infrastructure for refilling hydrogen tanks. The brand’s most popular market is the United States, and at present there are only 54 hydrogen refueling stations across the whole country. Of those, 53 are located in the state of California.

In Spain, for example, the situation is far worse. There are very few hydrogen stations, most of them privately operated and inaccessible to the majority of users. This lack of usability means that the company has decided to focus on other projects, which are more viable and practical.

For the moment, they are ruling out continuing down the path of hydrogen-powered vehicles, pending a change in the situation and the rollout of efficient infrastructure for refilling hydrogen tanks. This could take quite some time, so it is not the only company that has decided to shelve this type of vehicle until the technology advances and becomes more attractive to buyers. In the meantime, they will continue offering other variants and options closer to current uses.
