Jaguar and its D-segment saloon

It seems that Jaguar has studied the competition and concluded that, thanks to their different variants –coupé, convertible, wide range of engines,…– Audi, BMW and Mercedes enjoy great success in the market.

The leaders of Jaguar have been toying with the idea of developing a new mid-size saloon that could compete with well-established models such as the BMW 3 Series, the Audi A4 or the Mercedes C-Class. Adrian Hallmark, head of Jaguar, has confirmed this himself, believing that this time things could be different from the failure of the X-Type.

But to focus its efforts on this segment, Jaguar will have to shelve that SUV project which has caused such a stir and about which so much ink has been spilled. It seems that Jaguar has studied the competition and concluded that, thanks to their different variants –coupé, convertible, wide range of engines,…– the three brands mentioned above enjoy great success in the market.

But it is also true, as our colleagues at Autobild point out, that an SUV could have a greater impact for the Tata Motors brand than building a D-segment saloon. Yet we should not overlook the fact that in the US market, where things are going better than in Europe, a saloon would be well received.

Well then… we will have to wait until 2015 to see whether this is heading in the right direction or not. If it were up to us, we hope it goes ahead; competition is always good.
