Jeep Grand Cherokee L, the 7-seat SUV for American drivers

The new Jeep Grand Cherokee L has a length of 5.2 metres, a width of 1.96 metres and a height of 1.82 metres, so we are looking at a vehicle that aims to compete with the Land Rover Defender 110 and other SUVs of similar size. The wheelbase is 3.09 metres, which guarantees interior space for all seven passengers and a generous boot.

It offers a capacity of 484 litres, which can be expanded to 1,328 litres if the space of the third row of seats is used. Stylistically it has elements already seen on models such as the Jeep Grand Wagoneer Concept. The grille is typical of the brand, adjusted to the vehicle’s size and looking somewhat smaller visually, although it has all the strength this model requires.

The front light cluster has a horizontal layout and allows for an effective and attractive light signature. As for the lines used in the bodywork design, straight, very pronounced lines stand out, with a powerful and active presence. An SUV suited to the American public that arrives to become the brand’s flagship.

Interior equipment

The interior has not sought to take risks with innovative solutions. The shape and design of the instrumentation with physical controls is retained, although it includes all the technological innovations that have been incorporated into the brand’s models. A 10.3-inch screen displays the instrument cluster information, while an 8.4- or 10.1-inch screen controls the infotainment system.

Connectivity is ensured by the presence of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with 12 USB ports located at various points in the cabin, allowing all occupants to connect their devices. The 4G LTE Wi-Fi connection provides internet access for everyone.

Regarding safety, there is adaptive cruise control, LED matrix lighting, night vision, autonomous emergency braking, active steering assistance, traffic jam and parking assistants, among other driving assistance features.

Engines

So far only two engines have been announced. The first is a 3.6-litre V6 engine with 290 CV and the second, a 5.7-litre HEMI V8 that delivers 357 CV. Both engines are paired with an 8-speed automatic gearbox with the option of rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. In the latter case, three driving modes are available: Quadratrac I, Quadratrac II and Quadra-Drive II.

It also has the option of a low-range transfer case and features an electronically controlled centre and rear limited-slip differential. The air suspension allows ride height to be adjusted from 210 to 277 mm to tackle the most demanding terrain.
