Land Rover and Paul Smith create a unique Defender

Designer Paul Smith has collaborated with Land Rover to create a Defender inspired by the British countryside and the units used by the Armed Forces. The exterior comes in up to 27 different colours, while the interior features hand-stitched leather.

To mark the start of the final production phase of the Land Rover Defender, a model the brand has been forced to stop building because it does not meet strict emissions regulations, designer Paul Smith has wanted to pay tribute to one of the icons of British motoring of the last 60 years with a special edition.

Working in collaboration with Land Rover’s Special Vehicles Department, Smith has drawn inspiration from the colours of the British landscape, as well as from the units used by the British Army, to create a combination of 27 colours, some of which were chosen by the designer himself as a signature. However, exterior details such as the door handles, wing mirrors and wheels have been finished only in satin paint to follow the line of the bodywork.

Inside, the Land Rover Defender remains similar to its original design, except for a few details that add a sense of luxury. The upholstery has been replaced with a combination of black leather and fabric with blue stitching carefully selected by the designer. Keys have been printed inside the glovebox, a hand-painted bee appears on the roof lining, and the clock face on the dashboard carries Paul Smith’s signature.

In addition to Paul Smith’s Defender, Land Rover will offer the Defender Celebration Series editions. They will consist of three limited editions called Autobiography, Heritage and Adventure, which showcase the many facets of the 4×4, its off-road capability and its origins as a farm vehicle.
