Land Rover unveils its transparent trailer system

The British brand is developing a new technology that will allow the trailers we tow with its vehicles to become ‘invisible’ when we look through the rear-view mirror, eliminating blind spots and increasing safety on our journeys when towing a trailer. This technology is called Transparent Trailer and consists of a series of cameras distributed around the vehicle and an additional one installed at the rear of the trailer.
More than a year ago, Land Rover presented augmented reality technology that allowed vision through the bonnet, with the special function of improving visibility to make manoeuvres on uneven terrain easier. This same concept is used by Land Rover in the Transparent Trailer technology, a system that makes trailers become ‘invisible’ when we look through the rear-view mirror and eliminates the blind spots caused by towing this type of vehicle.

With this technology, when looking through the vehicle’s interior rear-view mirror, the driver will be able to see what is behind the trailer. This is achieved through a series of cameras distributed around the exterior of the Range Rover and a wireless additional camera that must be installed at the rear of the trailer. Naturally, the interior rear-view mirror is no longer a mirror, but a small screen that shows at all times what the vehicle’s cameras see.
Another feature of this technology is its ability to project guide lines showing the direction the trailer will follow during reversing manoeuvres. Complementing this system is a mobile app called Cargo Sense, which lets us monitor the status of the cargo in real time; for example, if animals are being transported, the app will alert us if the temperature is too high or if they appear restless.
