Lexus has unveiled its plans for a mobility revolution with the launch of avant-garde prototypes at the Kenshiki forum in Brussels. The Japanese brand, known for its innovative approach to automotive design and technology, has presented two concepts, LF-ZC and LF-ZL, which are expected to arrive in Europe by 2030, while also seeing the expansion of its RZ range in spring 2024 with the front-wheel-drive version.

LF-ZC and LF-ZL prototypes

The Lexus LF-ZC and LF-ZL prototypes, presented at the Kenshiki forum, are exciting previews of the brand’s next generation of electric vehicles, with which it aims to showcase its full potential. LF-ZC, short for “Lexus Future Zero-emission Catalyst” or zero-emission catalyst, offers a glimpse of the future electric saloon scheduled for 2026, featuring a spacious cabin and a lower centre of gravity.

Meanwhile, LF-ZL, meaning “Lexus Future Zero-emission Luxury“, is a benchmark electric SUV project that seeks a seamless connection between people, mobility and society, with sophisticated finishes using bamboo as a material.

Renewed interior and Arene operating system

The interior of these concepts features a fully digital, enveloping driver environment, with a yoke-type steering wheel and the One Motion Grip steer-by-wire system from Lexus. The new technological jewel, the Arene operating system, provides personalised entertainment and connectivity through artificial intelligence, learning the driver’s preferences and automatically activating functions without the need for intervention.

The functions are grouped into small digital screens on either side of the driver. The operational controls, such as gear selection, safety features and driver assistance systems (ADAS), as well as drive mode selection, are located on the left, while those of a more practical nature, such as audio, climate control, phone and AI functions, are grouped on the right.

New features of the new platform

The DIRECT4 system, already present in the Lexus RZ electric and the RX 500h sports hybrid, constantly balances torque between the front and rear axles for optimal traction, allowing a diverse range that includes models with multiple powertrain options, BEVs based on the current platform, and BEVs produced using Gigacast, a next-generation platform that promises up to 1000 km of range, greater rigidity and reduced weight. In spring 2024, a front-wheel-drive version of the RZ is expected, and by late 2024, the development of the RZ with One Motion Grip steer-by-wire will be completed.

Growth in Europe and sales success

In terms of figures, Lexus expects to reach approximately 74,000 units sold in Europe this year. This achievement is attributed to the almost complete renewal of its range, with models such as the NX, RX and RZ, offering hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric options. In addition, the introduction of models such as the LM and LBX in new market segments has further strengthened the brand’s presence on the continent.
