We continue with the GS saloon from Lexus, specifically the GS 450h, that is, the hybrid variant with 345 CV. In the first part of the test we analysed everything related to the performance and engine of this GS, an engine that combines a V6 petrol unit with an electric motor, with which the GS 450h delivers its sportier side.

Now, in this second part we will analyse the exterior design, the interior, the comfort and the space it offers to passengers. Although we can already say that space is not a problem in the Lexus GS.

Exterior design

Classic lines, a traditional saloon but with small touches that give it a different, personal and sporty character. At least that is my opinion of the GS, since from the side we see a large saloon with a traditional design, free of eccentricities.

That said, from the front, the large trapezoidal grille stands out – a true brand signature – along with a sporty front bumper (although the F Sport finish increases the sportiness even further) and bi-xenon headlights as standard.

Speaking of the headlights, they are bi-xenon as standard, but the higher trim levels use LED technology for all lighting functions. From the side the shapes are simple, elegant and in keeping with a saloon of this size and segment. The 18-inch alloy wheels fitted as standard stand out.

The part that changes most compared with the previous GS is the rear. The saloon character is now much more pronounced, and at the same time there are rear lights – with LED technology – that seem to look at you in a defiant way. The chrome line that outlines them also contributes to this sense of personal design, while giving it a sporty style.

Interior design, finishes and interior space

Inside, the most striking thing is the space and comfort it rewards its occupants with. Starting with seats that look more like armchairs, with every kind of luxury, including heating and ventilation, upholstered in micro-perforated leather.

The driving position is comfortable, with good visibility. Both the front seats and the steering wheel have electric adjustment and memory. It is a very comfortable position for travelling; there are all kinds of adjustments to set the seat to your liking, and everything is within easy reach from the driver’s seat.

In the back there is enough room for your feet, your head and three adults without any problem. Of course, two will travel like real heads of state, with armrests in the central seat, air vents and a large glovebox. Whoever sits in the centre seat will find a raised central tunnel and a backrest slightly firmer than the comfortable side armchairs.

CIMG8220The dashboard stands out for its large 12-inch central screen – standard – and because much of the controls are operated from the “mouse” on the central tunnel. At first it took us a little while to get used to all the controls, but after a few days we were managing the car well. There is still the same drawback as with the RX: I’m referring to the A/C button, which to switch it on or off you have to use the central joystick, and there is no physical button on the climate control – something basic. The classic touch on the dashboard is provided by the analogue clock.

The quality of the finish is high and it shows in the use of noble materials – such as wood – and in the door finishes, where no hard or poorly finished plastics can be seen. There are areas trimmed in leather, such as the upper part of the speedometer or the central tunnel, and overall finishes that are in line with the price and the premium label.

Storage and boot

In terms of storage spaces and places to leave your things, the GS comes well equipped, whether in the door pockets, the large central compartment or the main glovebox. In the rear seats the armrest houses cup holders and two storage compartments, one of them large.

The boot has a capacity of 482 litres, somewhat less than similar saloons (Mercedes E-Class 540 litres), but we must not forget that the batteries take up space. It is a boot with regular shapes and quite usable.

In the third part of the test we will focus on the equipment, not forgetting the safety equipment, and analyse the elements present in our test unit. We will also look at the prices of the Lexus GS and finish the test with our assessment of the car.
