Mazda Concepts Sports Cars Salón de Tokio
Mazda has us on the edge of our seats with a new sporty concept. A return to the Wankel engine?

Mazda is heading to the Tokyo Motor Show with a major novelty that, for now, is practically hidden in the shadows.
Although it doesn’t even have a name yet, this new Mazda concept has generated unusual expectation just a few hours after its unveiling.
Practically no details of the vehicle in question are known yet, just an image in the dark in which we can make out the silhouette of a sports car with two doors and smooth, rounded lines. According to Mazda, with this model the brand wants to condense its entire history of sports cars into a single model.
We have no mechanical details about this prototype, although the hypothesis of a return of rotary technology for this car is gaining more and more strength, which would mean the return of the Wankel engine that gave the Japanese brand so much success over many years. It is a fact that Mazda is working on and continuing to develop the rotary engine, so it is only a matter of time before they fit it to some car again.

It seems that, should this be the case, the Wankel will be reinforced and updated with the arrival of new technologies, also falling within the Skyactiv family, which would mean better performance, greater driving pleasure and, above all, a lower environmental impact and noticeably lower fuel consumption.
Mazda’s history with its rotary-engined sports cars ended in 2010 with the end of production of the RX-8, a sensational 2+2 with more than 230 CV. Its predecessor, the RX-7, was even more radical, with only two doors and two seats. From what is hinted at in the image provided by the brand, the new concept may be closer to the extinct RX-7 than to the RX-8. In any case, the motoring world is eager to see the most radical thing Mazda has produced in recent years.
