Mercedes-AMG announces that it is working on the development of a large electric SUV

Mercedes-AMG is about to take a very important step forward in the automotive sector with the launch of its first large electric SUV. This new model, known internally as “Born in Affalterbach“, is a pioneering project, as it will be the first SUV developed entirely from scratch by AMG, and will not simply be an improved version of a model from Mercedes-Benz, as has been the case until now.

This new electric SUV will be based on the new AMG.EA platform –AMG Electric Architecture-, specially designed for high-end electric models. This platform was previously tested on the Vision EQXX prototype, but has not yet been used in any series production model. As we have already mentioned in another article here on HighMotor, if there is one thing that stands out about the Vision EQXX prototype, it is its extraordinary efficiency, which leads us to believe that this will also be one of the qualities of this new electric SUV from Mercedes-AMG.

The Vision EQXX has demonstrated in real-world tests the capability of the AMG.EA platform, managing to cover more than a thousand kilometres on a single charge. This impressive figure suggests that range will be one of the strong points of this new electric SUV from Mercedes-AMG, relying for this on a battery pack of not excessive capacity, thanks to its extraordinary efficiency.

Above all, a true AMG

The managers of this project assure that the development of this new SUV is not focused exclusively on electric innovation, but that they are also paying special attention to ensuring it has the qualities typical of any AMG model, capable of delivering strong emotions and outstanding performance to anyone who sits behind the wheel. That is why the motto of the development team is none other than “AMG First, EV Second“, making clear that for them the fact that it is an electric model is secondary.

The company has not yet revealed all the details about the technology behind the AMG.EA platform, but we do know that it uses axial flux motors. These motors are recognised for their high power density, which gives them a significant advantage over conventional electric motors. Furthermore, this model will also feature a high-voltage battery pack optimised to deliver exceptional performance.

With this project, Mercedes-AMG seeks to become a leading player in the high-performance electric vehicle market. This change of direction thus represents not only a transition towards electrification, but also an evolution of its philosophy, combining the luxury, power and emotion that characterise the brand in an increasingly electrified world.
