Mercedes-Benz announces the launch of its own premium robotaxi service
Although it will not operate in Europe for the time being, since it is a European company we can dream that before long the autonomous vehicles of Mercedes-Benz will also be driving on the streets and roads of the continent.
Mercedes-Benz, together with the Chinese company Momenta, has just taken an important first step forward that should soon lead it to have its own passenger transport service, using fully autonomous Level 4 vehicles according to the SAE scale. That is, without the need for a driver under certain specific conditions.
This initiative by the German firm kicks off with a pilot phase in Abu Dhabi, where a fleet of Mercedes-Benz vehicles is being managed by Lumo, a subsidiary of the Emirati technology company K2, after having obtained federal authorisation to drive without a driver on the roads of the United Arab Emirates.

To carry out this project, Mercedes-Benz is using units of the new S-Class that have been fully adapted with all the equipment needed to offer a Level 4 autonomous driving system. This equipment includes LiDAR sensors, radars and high-resolution cameras.
“With a robotaxi based on the S-Class, we are raising the standard of automated mobility, always keeping safety and comfort as our absolute priorities. This project reinforces Mercedes-Benz’s long-standing leadership in autonomous driving”.
Mercedes-Benz aims to go much further in the field of autonomous driving
Following this first step in the United Arab Emirates, the German company plans to offer a version of this autonomous driving system capable of driving at 130 km/h on the road without a driver. But it will not stop there: to accelerate the development of its autonomous vehicles, Mercedes-Benz is also studying the possibility of collaborating with Nvidia to take advantage of its Drive AV platform, seeking to get more out of its own MB.OS operating system.

With this move, Mercedes-Benz not only launches what promises to be one of the most advanced robotaxi services in the world, but also lays the foundations for expanding it to other cities and markets in the coming years, consolidating its vision of intelligent, safe and sustainable mobility.
