Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the new AMG version of its E-Class, the E 63 AMG, a model updated in both its design and its mechanicals. The biggest news for this saloon or estate, both body styles are available, is the option of a 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system and an upgrade kit called S-Model.

The 5.5-litre V8 from the previous generation will remain in this thorough facelift. As before, this twin-turbocharged engine can leave the factory in two specifications. The lighter version offers 557 CV, while the S-Model equipment, thanks to higher boost pressure from the turbos, raises output to 585 CV.

For the first time, the E 63 AMG will have two drivetrain systems. The standard system on the less powerful saloon sends engine power only to the rear wheels. The S-Model can only be equipped with AMG 4MATIC, a sporty all-wheel-drive system that, under normal grip conditions, sends 33% of the torque to the front axle and the remaining 67% to the rear wheels. The rear wheels get a limited-slip differential. The whole system adds 70 kg to the vehicle’s total weight.

The seven-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7 automatic gearbox has four operating modes. The first, “D”, is designed to minimise fuel consumption. Next is Sport mode (“S”), then Sport Plus (“S+”), and finally a fully Manual mode (“M”). In the first option the automatic engine start-stop system is active; in the others it is deactivated, and the gears change faster and at higher engine speeds.

With Race Start activated, the rear-wheel-drive Mercedes-Benz E 63 AMG can reach 100 km/h from a standstill in 4.2 seconds, a time identical to the previous E 63 AMG with the AMG Performance kit. When the S-Model package is ordered, the saloon cuts this time to 3.6 seconds. The estate takes 0.1 seconds longer in every case. This makes it the fastest production saloon to date.

The braking system, designed for hard use on winding roads and even during short sessions on track, consists of 360 mm ventilated front discs with six-piston calipers on that axle and four-piston calipers at the rear. A carbon-disc set, up to 40% lighter and measuring 402 mm, is also offered.
