Mercedes-Benz introduces a trio of new engines and more options for the S-Class

Ahead of more information from Paris on the new two-and-a-half-litre diesel block, which would add a more affordable option to the German luxury saloon, the brand has confirmed the details of three other engines that are either familiar but improved to reduce their consumption and polluting emissions, or one that is entirely new.
We start with the S350 BlueEFFICIENCY, which, with new components such as a new intake manifold and exhaust system, and modifications such as reducing the V angle formed by the six cylinders from 90 to 60 degrees, sees power rise from 272 CV to 306 and maximum torque from 350 Nm to 370, available between 3,500 and 5,250 rpm. The most striking point is that fuel consumption drops from 10 litres per 100 km to 7.6, a 24% reduction, which is the same proportion by which CO2 emissions have fallen, from 234 grams per kilometre to 177.

The next petrol engine in the S-Class range is the twin-turbo V8 of the S500 BlueEFFICIENCY. Although its displacement has dropped from 5.4 litres to 4.6, power increases from 388 CV to 435, as does torque, which goes from 530 Nm to 700. What does decrease is average consumption, down to 9.4 l/100 km (15.5% less than before in short-wheelbase versions and 16% less in long-wheelbase ones), and CO2 emissions to 219 g/km.
The latest addition to the trio is the V6 diesel of the S350 CDI BlueTEC. The help provided by the AdBlue solution to filter nitrogen oxides, together with the selective catalytic converter, allows it to already meet the Euro 6 pollution standard that will come into force in 2014. Its power rises from 235 CV to 258 and maximum torque from 540 Nm to 620. The amount of diesel it uses falls by 0.8 l/100 km compared with the previous block, reaching 6.8, and emissions drop from 199 grams of CO2 per kilometre to 177. The 0 to 100 km/h acceleration it achieves is 7.1 seconds.

As the crowning touch to renewing its flagship, Mercedes-Benz has equipped the Driving Assistance Plus package with the lane-keeping assist and blind-spot monitoring system debuted on the refreshed CL. Two new leather upholsteries are also offered as options, called Passion and Exclusive Passion (the latter applies this material to almost the entire cabin and comes as standard on the S600), along with the Bang & Olufsen BeoSound AMG sound system, previously available only on the S65 AMG.
