Mustang earns gold by becoming the best-selling sports car in the world

Ford enjoys undeniable success, but the Ford Mustang is crowned the best-selling sports car in the world with more than 125,000 units produced in 2017.

Vehicle sales matter to every brand, especially when it comes to launching a somewhat more exclusive product onto the market. Ford enjoys undeniable success across its product range, something that also applies to the Mustang, the muscle car par excellence. This sports car has always been warmly received in its country of origin but, after the decision to sell the Mustang worldwide, Ford took a risk and accepted certain consequences, but without a doubt, this strategy worked out exactly as planned.

The American sports car arrived in Europe in 2015, a moment when all pony car enthusiasts were considerably thrilled. Thanks to this bold move by Ford, Europeans were able to enjoy a genuinely American vehicle, with performance on a par with many homegrown sports cars and, at the same time, at a very modest price for what the Mustang is capable of offering. The American company has not changed its strategy, since today its flagship vehicle has been crowned the best-selling sports car in the world for the third consecutive time.

To fit into a market with far more modest engines than those found in the American market, Ford created an engine suited to the rest of the world. It was a four-cylinder EcoBoost engine capable of producing 317 CV, an entry-level model that still offered everything good about the Mustang but with much more restrained consumption. However, the company also had in mind those more purist customers, the old-school enthusiasts and that is why the V8 5.0 Coyote remained an option for the entire world.

This approach worked perfectly and today Ford can boast of having sold 125,809 units of the muscle car during 2017, which were distributed across 146 different countries. Of that total, Ford registered 81,866 Mustangs in the United States, a figure that clearly demonstrates it remains a favorite vehicle in its country of origin but, at the same time, success in the rest of the world is undeniable.

At the same time, the favorite combination among Mustang customers is the V8 engine paired with the coupe body, a configuration that exudes a retro flavor, since it carries the same essence as its predecessors. Without a doubt, the muscle car has won hearts all over the world and, little by little, will venture further into our side of the pond.

With the renewal of the Ford Mustang, the American company intends to keep offering its customers the same sports car that we already got to know three years ago, but with both aesthetic and mechanical improvements. With the launch of this second generation of the muscle car worldwide, Ford makes its intentions very clear to keep selling the Mustang everywhere with its future generations.
