New Opel Zafira: look change and technological upgrade

Just a few days ago we brought you the images leaked of the new Opel Zafira. They were computer renders of rather poor quality and with few details. Now we have the official photos of the Opel MPV for everyone to see.

Only minutes ago the German brand presented the thorough restyling of the Opel Zafira. Its styling changes considerably on the outside, while the interior features a new layout for the instrument cluster and more technology. Mechanically, no changes appear.

As we were saying, although it may seem like a completely new model, it is not. It is a fairly significant facelift of the Opel Zafira Tourer launched in 2012, which does not amount to a generational replacement in the usual sense.

The design of the front and the interior is inherited from the Opel AstraOn the outside we find a front design clearly inherited from the Opel Astra we got to know several months ago. The shapes of the headlights, the grille and even the lower area of the bumper are very similar to those used on the Astra and the Corsa. These headlights can incorporate adaptive LED lighting technology. On the other hand, the rear remains unchanged compared with the version launched in 2012.

Once inside the cabin, we again find similarities with the latest creations from Opel. The instrument cluster as well as the centre console area is updated with a more modern image for the cluster and a much cleaner and more functional design for the console, which used to be excessively loaded with buttons and now features a 7-inch touch screen. The steering wheel also changes, now using the same one as the current Opel Astra.

Technology, comfort and driving assistance systems

The WiFi hotspot allows up to seven devices to be connectedIn the technology and infotainment area, we find the IntelliLink R4.0 system, which allows smartphones to be connected and is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. For customers who also need a navigator, there is the IntelliLink Navi 950. The well-known OnStar personal assistance system is also present, with automatic emergency calls in the event of an accident, along with the 4G LTE WiFi internet access point that can connect seven devices.

As for comfort, the Opel Zafira Tourer can be fitted with comfortable AGR seats in the front seats. The second row of seats can be adjusted both in length and in backrest angle, allowing a few centimetres of extra space for the boot or for the two possible occupants of the third row. This third row folds into the boot floor when not in use, leaving a totally flat surface with a 710-litre boot capacity. If the second row is also folded down, this space grows to 1,860 litres.

Some of the driving assistance systems include lane departure warning, blind spot sensor, adaptive cruise control and rear-view camera, alongside the previously mentioned adaptive LED lighting. It also has the Opel Eye, which is able to recognise road signs, switch between high and low beam depending on conditions, or warn us of a possible collision.

It seems that for now Opel will not introduce new engines in the MPV, keeping the current range with diesel, petrol and LPG engines. The brand has not commented on the price or the arrival dates of the first units. We don’t expect it to rise too much compared with the current Zafira Tourer, and we imagine it will reach dealerships in the last quarter of the year.
