New Toyota Land Cruiser: even more off-road capability

The new generation of the Toyota Land Cruiser improves both on and off the asphalt and is now available from €36,050

For over 65 years, the Toyota Land Cruiser has established itself as one of the benchmarks in the off-road segment. An icon of the 4×4 world, it was renewed in 2018 to keep showcasing all its off-road power, while also modernising its design to fight the “SUV invasion“.

2.8 D-4D 177 CV Turbodiesel Engine

Toyota is launching the new Land Cruiser with a single engine option: the 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel, which delivers 177 CV at 3,400 rpm and reaches a top speed of 175 km/h. To make the most of its power, this unit can be paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox or an automatic gearbox with the same number of gears.

With the automatic gearbox of the Toyota, the engine produces 370 Nm of torque at just 1,200 rpm, while its peak torque reaches 450 Nm between 1,600 and 2,400 rpm. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 12.7 seconds. With the manual gearbox, the Land Cruiser has a peak torque of 420 Nm, between 1,400 and 2,600 rpm, and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 12.1 seconds. In both cases, the homologated consumption is 7.4 l/100 km and the CO2 emissions are 194 g/km.

Greater off-road capability

The new Land Cruiser retains its key differentiator, the exclusive body-on-frame construction, which continues to give the Japanese off-roader an advantage over competitors that opt for monocoque designs. In addition, Toyota has improved its 4×4 capabilities thanks to two rear differential variants and a new AUTO mode within the Multi-Terrain Select System.

To improve an already exceptional traction, the rear differential of the new Land Cruiser offers two variants: open or the new Torsen-type Limited-Slip Differential (LSD). With the new traction system, the torque distribution between the 4 driven wheels ensures that no gradient stands in our way.

In addition, Toyota has improved its Multi-Terrain Select System (MTS) with the addition of a new AUTO mode, which is activated automatically through the five-speed Active Traction Control function. Besides this mode, the MTS system offers five selectable terrain modes (Mud and sand, Loose rock, Moguls, Rock and gravel, and Rock), each with its own preset parameters depending on the off-road surface the vehicle is on.

More dynamism on the road

The improved off-road capabilities are matched on tarmac. Thanks to the adaptive suspension and its five driving modes (Eco, Comfort, Normal, Sport S and Sport S+), the new Land Cruiser is also able to handle the road with ease. It also incorporates a range of driver assistance systems that enhance driver safety both on and off the asphalt.

The higher-spec versions with automatic gearbox come equipped with the Toyota Safety Sense system. A comprehensive safety package that includes Pre-Collision Safety System, Pedestrian Detection, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert, Intelligent High Beam Control and Road Sign Assist. These road safety features are complemented by enhanced 360º Camera System functions.

Design updates

Retaining its robustness as its hallmark, the new Toyota Land Cruiser has been adapted to modern times with styling touches that refine its silhouette. It also updates and provides greater technology and comfort to the cabin.

The front of the Land Cruiser has undergone the most changes. The grille, the new headlights and the bumper have been raised slightly to improve its 4×4 performance, and the bonnet has been lowered in its centre to improve visibility from the driver’s seat.

The interior has seen substantial changes. New dashboard and a new layout of the instrument panels for a more intuitive and ergonomic interface. The centre console has three distinct zones, each for transmission, driving and comfort controls, and is topped by a new 8-inch touchscreen, from which all infotainment and navigation assistants can be controlled thanks to the Toyota Touch® 2 & GO system.
