The new Volkswagen Arteon is now also offered in estate bodywork, with the diesel and petrol engines already available plus an R variant and a PHEV version

Anyone who has driven any of its variants will not deny that this car was one of the most comfortable saloons on the market. Whether for long-distance journeys or everyday use, once you stepped inside its cabin, the enjoyment of this saloon was guaranteed, especially in the rear seats. Something that not only remains true in the new Volkswagen Arteon fastback bodywork but, with the introduction of the estate bodywork, is even more undeniable.
A rear row that, thanks to the new layout as a shooting break (what we in Spain call a ‘ranchera’), offers around 5 centimetres more legroom thanks to the architecture of this high-volume bodywork version.

The advantages of the new Volkswagen Arteon Shooting Break

This is because, while maintaining the essential dimensions of both versions, with an overall length of 4.87 metres and a wheelbase of 2.84 m, thanks to the revised roof, which keeps the sloping line of the bodywork from the B-pillar down to its pronounced drop at the C-pillar, the car’s height increases by 19 mm. This allows more clearance around the shoulders and heads of the rear occupants.

Despite what one might think, the

boot load volume, with the parcel shelf in its standard position, is just 2 litres larger in the Volkswagen Arteon Shooting Break (563 litres in the saloon versus 565 in the estate), but when the rear seats are folded down the increase is significant (from 1,557 to 1,632 litres).

With this interior configuration, the clear distance between the loading opening and the front seat row offers more than 2 metres of unobstructed space for accommodating large items, as befits a proper shooting break.

Enhancing interior space

In any case, continuing with the interior space of the new Volkswagen Arteon, among the new features equipping this sensational car

in estate bodywork as well as fastback, there is the standardisation of the Digital Cockpit Pro across all four of its trim levels (the base Arteon, Elegance, R-Line and R). It uses a 10.25-inch screen, standard from now on, which includes, among other elements, a display of up to 9.2 inches in the central console below the air vents.

A screen that now

looks better and more capable thanks to the online information and entertainment systems it provides, which can be accessed through its interface.

The same applies to the driver assistance and safety systems that promote safety both on the move and when stationary. Thanks to, for example, the active cruise control, which can manage interaction with its surroundings up to 210 km/h, adjusting speed according to traffic density, road signs and even the layout of the road, as it can adapt the car’s pace to roundabouts or junctions in built-up areas.

Furthermore, regarding assistance when the car is stationary or at very low speed while parking, the exterior cameras, with views from 90 to 170 degrees, and the trailer assist for driving, allow for safer and more efficient manoeuvring.

A mechanical configuration for every taste and need

The engines that will power this car can be added to the diesel, petrol and hybrid powertrains

.

As for the

diesel engines of the new Volkswagen Arteon, they will be offered from the 150 or 200 CV TDI, the former with front-wheel drive and the latter all-wheel drive.

For those who opt for a petrol new Volkswagen Arteon, the TSI petrol engine delivers 190, 280 and up to 320 CV, depending on configuration. The 190 version also sends its power only to the rear axle, while the more powerful versions drive both axles.

With R for racing

As for the most powerful, the new Volkswagen Arteon R

, in both standard and high-capacity bodywork, will feature 420 Nm of torque. It will also be equipped with a sportier suspension setup and an intelligent torque distribution system that ensures each wheel receives the optimal amount of power at all times, thanks to the R Performance Torque Vectoring incorporated in this sporty and practical variant.

An electrifying new Volkswagen Arteon eHybrid

Finally, the electrification of the Volkswagen Arteon as a plug-in hybrid

, both in its saloon and estate bodywork, will combine a 1.4 TSI petrol engine producing 156 CV with an electric unit of 115 CV, for a total system output of 218 hp.

With an all-electric range of a little over 50 km, the

new Volkswagen Arteon eHybrid will, according to this configuration (also present in other equivalent Group Volkswagen models), be most directly rivalled by the Skoda Superb iV, which is more modest in finish and price though not in ride quality and interior enjoyment, and offers 54 km in electric mode.

These plug-in hybrid versions of the Volkswagen Arteon PHEV will be available from the end of 2020.
