New Volkswagen ID.7: this is the electric saloon that will finally let you stop worrying about range

The ID family continues to grow, and it does so “in a big way” with the new Volkswagen ID.7, quite literally. We are looking at an all-electric saloon measuring no less than 4.9 metres in length, with a wheelbase of almost 3 metres (2,966 mm) and a height of 1.54 metres. But the ID.7 is not big only in size: Volkswagen dares to announce a WLTP range of up to 700 km, figures still pending homologation which will, no doubt, make you look at the electric future heading our way with fresh eyes.

In principle, Volkswagen’s plans foresee the ID.7, which will reach our market this autumn, coexisting with the current Volkswagen Passat and Arteon until these reach the end of their production. It is therefore clear that the ID.7 is a key model for the brand’s plans, which aim for 80% of the models it sells in Europe to be electric. For now, the range already includes the compact ID.3, the SUVs ID.4 and ID.5 and their corresponding ID.4 GTX and ID.5 GTX versions, and the MPV ID.Buzz, to which the ID.7 is now added, and very soon the ID.2 will join them.

Pro and Pro S versions with 77 kWh and 86 kWh net batteries

The ID.7’s propulsion system, developed by Volkswagen, is based on the MEB modular electric platform. Two versions are offered: Pro, with a 77 kWh net battery (82 kWh gross), and Pro S, in which the battery reaches 86 kWh net (91 kWh gross). Initial forecasts foresee WLTP ranges of up to 615 km in the first case, and up to 700 km with the higher-capacity battery, which will accept fast charging with direct current at a power of up to 200 kW.

The electric motor, a permanent-magnet synchronous type, delivers 210 kW (286 CV) in both cases and is located on the rear axle. In addition to the efficiency of the propulsion system and the capacity of the batteries, another key to the ID.7’s range figures lies in its aerodynamics, with a Cd of 0.23.

A cabin full of new features

Volkswagen announces a good number of new features for the ID.7 related to comfort, connectivity and driver assistance systems. For example, the electric saloon will be the first model from the brand to debut an adaptive Climatronic climate control system for the seats that takes temperature and humidity into account. And at the driving position the instrumentation behind the steering wheel has also been reduced to a minimum, to give prominence to the 15-inch multimedia screen and to an augmented reality HUD system that projects information onto the windscreen. The ID.7 will be the first Volkswagen model with a system of this kind as standard.

For the central screen, Volkswagen has devised a freely configurable shortcut layout, adding illuminated touch sliders below it to control the climate control and the volume of the audio system, which can reach up to 700 watts and 14 speakers in the top version. The voice assistant allows you to operate functions such as the ambient lighting, the panoramic roof, selecting the driving mode, or making queries based on data stored in the cloud, such as the weather, searching for a destination or traffic.

Other novelties include the climate control system with intelligent diffusers, designed so that occupants barely perceive any draughts, the intelligent panoramic roof capable of becoming opaque or transparent even via a voice command, the Park Assist Pro with memory function, or the improved Travel Assist assistant.
