New Volkswagen Touran, more and better

Volkswagen presents the new generation of one of its most successful models of the last century. We’re talking about the Touran, which debuts just a few days before the Geneva Motor Show.

It arrives as a total overhaul that was already overdue, bringing with it a more accomplished design and better technical qualities.

Focusing on the exterior design, it’s clear that things have changed a lot at VW in recent years. The new Touran is now much more attractive. The front view has regained the freshness it once had, thanks to lines very similar to those of the brand’s new models such as the Golf Sportsvan or the new Passat. The much longer grille adds a sense of width. The new headlights can optionally incorporate LED technology.

The side is the part that changes least compared with its predecessor, which is logical given that the Touran has not changed its market positioning, so it remains, basically, a compact MPV where space is part of its appeal. The rear remains eminently square, but thanks to light clusters similar to those of the Passat and the various creases in the bodywork, the look is much more pleasing than the Touran sold until now.

Inside, the leap has been very big. This is logical given that the Touran still broadly kept the dashboard it debuted back in 2003, 12 years ago, no more and no less. Now, with a much more attractive look, the Touran has entered the new decade with force. Anyone who has driven a VW in recent years will quickly feel at home at the controls of the Touran, everything is where it should be. The equipment gains a lot with the addition of new infotainment and active safety systems.

The interior space is now even greater. Thanks to the growth in its dimensions, occupants now enjoy greater headroom and width, something that is also noticeable in the boot, which now offers 1,040 litres, 48 litres more, a figure that can increase to 1,980 litres depending on the configuration. It can be purchased in a 5- or 7-seat configuration.

The new Touran is built on the MQB modular platform, which helps reduce costs… and weight. This new generation is up to 62 kg lighter than the previous one, despite being larger and carrying more technology. As for the powertrains, it will offer a wide range of both diesel and petrol engines, all of them already known within the VW Group. In petrol, power outputs range from 110 to 180 CV, while in diesel the expected range is between 110 and 190 CV. On average, fuel consumption has been reduced by 19%.
