Whether we like it or not, the Volkswagen Golf is a true benchmark, even though it has been on the market for several years and many cars are aimed at overtaking it, if they haven’t already. Almost unexpectedly, the Golf reinvents itself with each generation, without leaving behind the updates of the GTI, the model that always generates the most talk in the Volkswagen range.

But we didn’t come here to talk about the Golf, although the subject touches it quite closely. The fact is that Nissan, like other brands, also seems to feel guilty about not having a rival to the Golf, so it is preparing exactly that: a rival to the Golf that could reach the market next year.

According to Andy Palmer, the chief executive in charge of the project, it must not only be one more option against the Golf, but must match it, in dynamic terms as well as in quality and performance. However, Nissan says it has a winning card up its sleeve, which will give the future Japanese model added value over the Golf: not being as boring as the Golf VII, but having a personality of its own.

The premise seems to be that the Nissan Invitation Concept will be a good basis for this future model, of which we have only had the chance to see a few spy photos. In fact, the new production Invitation will be built at the Zona Franca in Barcelona, for further details.

Finally, the new model will evoke past models in its name, according to Palmer, so all that remains is to imagine that Nissan may once again bring back well-known designations from other models.
