Nissan has camperized its X-Trail, and the result is this Overlander version, which is going to delight the most adventurous drivers

A special tuning setup to improve its off-road capabilities, plus the equipment typical of a camper van, make the Nissan X-Trail Overlander an ideal vehicle for adventure lovers.

Nissan took us to the snow without leaving Madrid, to the Snozone artificial ski slope facilities, to check first-hand the performance of its e-4ORCE all-wheel-drive system, but it also had a surprise in store for us: the new Nissan X-Trail Overlander, the camperized version of its most popular SUV.

This special version for the Spanish market combines in a model like the X-Trail an SUV capable of tackling the most demanding conditions once the tarmac runs out, with all the equipment of a true minicamper van. Best of all, the camperization can be fully à la carte, meaning each customer can choose the camper modules or equipment they want to install individually. And all of them are compatible with any version of the X-Trail range, regardless of engine and trim level, as long as it is the 5-seat variant.

The Overlander preparation includes a suspension with increased ground clearance and BFGoodrich All-Terrain tyres, plus an engine sump guard and a sturdy roof rack that integrates LED headlights. With this alone, the X-Trail increases its ability to venture off the tarmac to a limit you would not imagine, making the most of the e-4ORCE system’s capabilities. This system uses a 204 CV electric motor on the front axle and another 136 CV on the rear axle, for a combined total output of 213 CV. Propulsion is always electric to all four wheels, with no mechanical connection between the two axles.

Up to two beds, gas stove and shower

The 1.5 turbo petrol engine only works to generate energy to power the electric motors and the small 2.7 kWh battery. A system that proved its good performance on the Snozone artificial snow when individually controlling the torque reaching each wheel. In addition, this layout also has other advantages, such as a more favourable weight distribution. It also allows the electric motors to be controlled so that, when driving on the road, body roll is minimised. Here you can read the road test of the Nissan X-Trail that we carried out at the time.

As for the camperization, it could not be better resolved. The interior module includes a bed, a small 18-litre fridge, a sink, a gas stove, a water tank to connect a hose for an outdoor shower, a battery charger and multiple additional power sockets. On the outside, the standout feature is the extendable side awning with an enclosure kit that creates a living space of about 20 square metres, which can also be illuminated with LED lights. And as the “cherry on top”, a roof tent with its telescopic access ladder offers a generous interior space, with a 160 x 200 cm bed. Undoubtedly a magnificent idea that perfectly combines the best of a 4×4 with the world of camping.
