The Ferrari Purosangue will be powered by a V8 with hybrid assistance and will reach the market in 2022.

Ferrari’s new SUV could be more powerful than the Lamborghini Urus and the brand of the Cavallino Rampante is in the middle of developing its first SUV, and everything points to the vehicle delivering more power than the one that has become the flagship of the bull brand and the reason for the manufacturer’s growth over the last six months: the Urus.

Ferrari has remained fairly quiet about its SUV; over the past year it has only confirmed that it was developing a car with off-road capabilities under the name Purosangue, which in Italian means ‘thoroughbred’. Some sources assure that the future Italian SUV will probably push the performance of this type of vehicle to new limits.

It is believed that the Ferrari Purosangue will be powered by some kind of V8 heart, probably fitted with a pair of turbochargers and some form of hybrid assistance. It is important to note that the Urus is capable of producing 641 CV from its 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 and, with the addition of a hybrid system.

The future Ferrari SUV may have much more power and aggressiveness. The transaxle layout of the Purosangue’s platform is located at the rear, which means the front wheels will be driven, in part, by electricity.

Ferrari Purosangue, the SUV arrives for the Italian brand

Ferrari’s decision to launch an SUV is clearly motivated by the expectation of earning a great deal of money with a vehicle like this. SUVs are the must-have items for the global elite and, as the Lamborghini Urus, Bentley Bentayga, Rolls-Royce Cullinan and and Aston Martin DBX compete in this segment of the market, it was only a matter of time before Ferrari joined the party.

Nobody outside Ferrari has any idea what the company’s first SUV will look like, but it is inevitable that it will share some design features with Ferrari’s existing models. The Purosangue can be expected to feature sharp, aggressive front light units, round rear lights and even a set of large, very sporty wheels.

The future Ferrari Purosangue will be built on a new platform, called GT, with a front mid-engine layout that will also underpin some of Ferrari’s more conventional models. On the other hand, the idea of a Ferrari SUV may seem as ridiculous as it did five years ago. As recently as 2016, Ferrari’s late chief, Sergio Marchionne, told financial analysts that “you have to shoot me first” in reference to the launch of a future crossover, for that to happen.

The new Ferrari SUV arriving in 2022 will have five doors and a 2+2 configuration with seating for four occupants. It will become the generational successor to the Ferrari GTC4Lusso and could retain its styling features, although with a much taller body, which will allow it to offer greater ground clearance than the rest of the Italian models.

The long-awaited and powerful Ferrari Purosangue could reach the market during 2022, and its price could be around 350,000 euros as standard and rise to 500,000 euros if customised.
