In order to optimise engine performance and achieve a faster and more precise response to throttle inputs, the engineers in the Polestar division of Volvo have been working on updates focused on the latest Drive-E engine family of the Swedish brand. The first model to receive this update in its engines will be the limited-edition Volvo V40 Carbon Edition.

Engineers at Polestar have been working to improve the handling and driving control of the Volvo V40. To do so, they have focused on five key areas of the powertrain: throttle response, the speed and precision of gear changes, power compensation during acceleration response, and engine performance.

It is in this last area of engine performance that the changes made by Volvo’s engineers are most visible. The Drive-E petrol T5 and diesel D4 engines receive power increases of 25 CV and 50 Nm on the T5, and 16 CV and 40 Nm on the D4. The total figures for the T5 are 253 CV and 400 Nm of maximum torque, and for the D4 200 CV and 440 Nm of torque. These gains and their optimisation are centred on the mid-range of engine speeds for both units: between 2,000 and 4,500 rpm for the petrol engine and between 1,500 and 3,500 rpm for the diesel.

The Carbon Edition of the Volvo V40 is a limited series of 343 units that will be available in Finland, France, Japan, the Netherlands and Sweden. They will arrive from June 2015 and will come with extensive standard equipment, including the Harman/Kardon premium sound system, keyless start, timer-controlled auxiliary heating, tinted rear windows and heated rear seats, among others, as well as exclusive 19-inch wheels, red seatbelts and carbon-fibre exterior details.
