Porsche builds new instrument panels for classic 911s

Porsche links the instrument panels to the new navigation systems it introduced earlier this year for classic 911s. This new maintenance and restoration strategy undertaken by Porsche Classic is aimed at original cars that are more than 50 years old.

Deterioration in vehicles with more than 50 years of life and history is inevitable. Models such as the Porsche 911, which debuted in 1963, in many cases suffer from deterioration of interior components that can hardly be restored using traditional techniques. For this reason, the historic models division of the manufacturer based in Stuttgart, Porsche Classic, has launched a campaign this year to remanufacture and sell original parts for classic models, particularly for the iconic 911.

At the beginning of 2015, Porsche Classic presented a line of integrated navigation units that replaced the original radio unit of the Porsche 911. Aesthetically, it preserved the original design as faithfully as possible, but included more modern features such as navigation itself, Bluetooth and USB connectivity, among others. The next step taken by Porsche has been the launch of original instrument panels, aimed at providing a replacement for one of the parts most affected by solar radiation and high temperatures and humidity.

According to Porsche Classic, the instrument panel consists of a modern substructure, while the surface cover is original. “The ribbed texture and the feel, gloss and black tone are identical to the original,” the German manufacturer states. The instrument panel, which also includes the speaker cover, can only be installed using the original assembly procedure, which is carried out by removing the windscreen, and for this reason Porsche Classic recommends that it be installed by the brand’s experts.

Because modern materials better withstand the passage of time, Porsche Classic has redesigned the instrument panel to help preserve the long-term value of classic 911s. The manufacturer states that the new panel has undergone exhaustive testing to guarantee its quality, is designed for the Porsche 911 built between 1969 and 1975, and is available in Germany from 951.99 euros, installation not included.
