Porsche prepares new, more efficient engines for the Cayman and the Boxster

Porsche-Cayman-1
Porsche has announced that there will be a new family of engines for the Cayman and Boxster models, which will be definitively fitted to these models from the first months of 2016. The engines being prepared at present were not originally planned, but European Union regulations are forcing the company to rethink its powertrains.

These are the engines that were to power the future entry-level models of the next generation of these models, although the brand’s engineers are working against the clock to have them ready for installation within a few years. Apparently, and according to a statement, it will be a turbocharged four-cylinder engine that will, almost certainly, replace the current powertrains.

The engines arriving soon are a 2.0-litre unit and a 2.5-litre unit. With the turbocharger, the 2.0-litre engine will be able to deliver power ranging from 300 CV to 355 CV. If the information is correct, this engine could replace the 2.7-litre and 3.5-litre powerplants, as it is more efficient than these and provides sufficient power to be their replacement.

As for the 2.5-litre engine, it could find its place in different models, since it will offer a power output of 395 CV and could be the future powerplant for some of the company’s classic models. Initially it could appear in the next generation of the Cayman and Boxster, as a trial, and go on to be incorporated into the range of new models, if the results are as good as expected.

For the time being, the brand’s fans will continue to enjoy a variety of familiar engines, although the 911 GTS, Carrera, Carrera S, Turbo and Turbo S will be turbocharged, though these models will continue to offer a version with naturally aspirated engines, to cater for fans of these classic engines that have been present in the brand’s cars for years.
