Ranking 2026: the 6 best-value plug-in hybrid SUVs under 45,000 euros

Five PHEV SUVs under 45,000 euros that we have analysed: homologated electric range, standard equipment, warranty and real cost of use

The plug-in hybrid SUV segment has changed its skin in barely two years. What was once almost exclusively the territory of European brands—with prices starting close to fifty thousand euros—now admits contenders capable of offering 80, 90 and even more than 100 kilometres of homologated electric range below the psychological barrier of 45,000 euros. And with equipment that until recently belonged to the upper range.

This ranking deliberately leaves out BYD models. In our view, the Chinese manufacturer’s historical advantage in value for money has narrowed noticeably with the arrival of a new wave of European and Asian rivals offering more complete packages for similar money. This is not a criticism of the BYD product; it is an editorial decision to focus on the proposals that, in our judgement, currently set the benchmark for value for money in the PHEV segment.

What a PHEV SUV must offer in 2026 to justify its price

A plug-in below 45,000 euros can no longer hide behind the ZERO label. The minimum bar, for us, rests on three things: homologated electric range above 70 km WLTP—which translates into 55-60 km real-world—, DC fast charging or at least decent three-phase AC, and equipment that does not force the customer to dig into their pocket for options that three years ago were standard on a premium compact. If the warranty also reaches seven years, all the better. If not, defending the purchase starts to get difficult.

Geely Starray EM-i — from 30,490 €

The newcomer that has unsettled several rivals. The Geely Starray EM-i presents a proposal that is hard to match: more than 100 km of homologated electric range, a combined consumption that in practice stays below 1.5 l/100 km if charged daily, and a starting price that opens the market to a public that until yesterday only looked at conventional hybrids. The interior surprises—materials above what the price suggests and a central screen that works without the usual stutters of the brand.

MG HS PHEV — from 37,340 €

MG has understood the game. The MG HS plug-in offers a large usable battery for the segment and an electric range close to 100 km WLTP in its long-range version. Seven years of standard warranty, a spacious cabin and a price that—for the package it brings—borders on the indecent compared with German rivals. The catch? A rather soft driving feel and some plastics on the centre console that, to my taste, do not quite match the rest of the interior.

Jaecoo 7 SHS — from 34,400 €

The Jaecoo 7 in its Super Hybrid System variant is perhaps the best-executed surprise of the year. Styling with Range Rover airs—yes, it shows—but with a plug-in hybrid setup that promises more than 90 electric km and a homologated consumption below one litre. Serious standard equipment: panoramic roof, 360° camera, ventilated seats. How residual value holds up remains to be seen, but from the outset the package is hard to argue with.

Omoda 9 SHS — from 41,499 €

A step above the Jaecoo in size and premium content. The Omoda 9 SHS bets on a four-motor system—two electric motors and the combustion engine—with more than 500 combined CV and an electric range exceeding 140 km WLTP in mixed cycle. On paper it belongs to another league; in practice, one must accept that Omoda still has much to prove on long-term reliability. Even so, for less than 40,000 euros there is nothing similar in combined power and range.

Peugeot 3008 Hybrid Plug-in — from 37,130 €

The French contender closes the ranking brushing the top of the price range. The new 3008 PHEV bets on distinctive design, a renewed i-Cockpit and a homologated electric range above 80 km. It rides well, and the interior conveys a sense of quality that remains one of Peugeot’s strengths in this segment. On the downside, a starting price that leaves little margin against the new competition and options that are charged generously.

Summary table and editorial score

Modelo Precio desde Autonomía eléctrica Potencia Equipamiento Garantía Nota /10
Geely Starray EM-i 30,490 € 112 km 262 CV High 7 years 9.0
MG HS PHEV 37,340 € 90 km 268 CV High 7 years 8.8
Jaecoo 7 SHS 34,400 € 90 km 279 CV Very high 7 years 8.6
Omoda 9 SHS 41,499 € 145 km 537 CV Very high 7 years 8.5
Peugeot 3008 Hybrid Plug-in 37,130 € 85 km 225 CV Medium-high 2 years 7.8

The editorial winner is the Geely Starray EM-i for its balance between entry price, range and content. The MG HS and the Jaecoo 7 SHS follow closely with slightly different propositions—the former bets on raw range, the latter on perceived quality. We also recall that the current framework in Spain is the Plan Auto+, whose amounts should be checked on the official website before signing any deal.

Frequently asked questions

What real electric range can I expect from these PHEV SUVs?
In real mixed use, apply a 20-30% discount to the WLTP figure. A Starray EM-i homologated at 83 km will deliver between 58 and 65 real electric km; the MG HS with 120 km WLTP falls in the 85-95 real km range depending on route and temperature.

Is a PHEV worthwhile if I cannot charge it at home?
Honestly, not entirely. The economic logic of a plug-in breaks down if it is not plugged in. Without home or workplace charging, real consumption soars above that of a conventional hybrid due to the extra weight of the battery.

Which warranty is the most complete in this ranking?
The three Chinese models—Geely, MG and Jaecoo/Omoda—offer seven years as standard, with nuances in mileage. Cupra and Peugeot stay at the two legal years, extendable through paid extensions.

Does a PHEV keep the ZERO label indefinitely?
Yes, as long as the DGT does not modify the current criteria. Any plug-in with more than 40 km of homologated electric range keeps the ZERO badge, with the advantages of access to ZBE zones and parking that this entails in Spain’s main cities.
