Renault Morphoz, the car that stretches to fit a second battery

This concept model has the feature that it can stretch to accommodate a second battery for long journeys and to gain more range

Despite the cancellation of the Geneva Motor Show, brands are still willing to go ahead with their plans to present new models, so that we can get to know the novelties they wanted to unveil there. And one of those novelties has been the Renault Morphoz. This prototype from the French brand is designed to have two electric battery configurations. Both of them, in the same car.

The trick of the Renault Morphoz is that the chassis of this model can be lengthened to house an extra battery if greater range is required. In principle, this concept model has a 40 kWh battery, which is what it needs to get around the city and day to day, with 400 kilometres of range. If greater range is needed, the length of the car can be increased and an additional 50 kWh battery can be fitted, raising the range up to 700 kilometres.

The Renault Morphoz is built on the CMF-EV platform (Common Module Family – Electric Vehicle), which the French brand shares with Mitsubishi and Nissan, and has been modified so that it can offer this functionality. The car grows from 4.40 metres to 4.80 metres, leaving enough space to fit this battery.

To carry out this operation, the car must be parked on a platform that activates the conversion system and inserts the additional battery. It is still unclear how this platform will work, whether it will be installed in the brand’s official workshops or whether it could be placed in certain public locations.

As for the appearance of the concept model, it anticipates what Renault may offer in the not-too-distant future and will set the direction for the vehicles we will soon see in its range. Its look reminds us of an SUV, with futuristic yet contemporary lines. Inside, we will see a cabin design that is also very modern and practical.

Futuristic seats that can be moved to offer different configurations and, in addition, a steering wheel that hides away, which confirms that we are looking at an autonomous car. The technology will be as advanced as possible, with artificial intelligence capable of responding to voice commands and suggesting activities to do during the journey.

The augmented reality and 3D vision technology to display the space around the car and the route to follow is another of the attractions of this concept car, which will soon be seen across the different models of Renault. We do not know whether this technology will reach production, but it is certainly a rather interesting solution.
