Rivian has unveiled the seven-seat electric SUV that joins the electric pick-up with which it wants to position itself in the EV market in the US

Rivian R1S Los Angeles

Rivian presented at the Los Angeles Show its pick-up electric, a vehicle that aims to position itself in a very popular market in the United States, in electric form and with the intention of becoming the pick-up electric that wins over American buyers. But in addition to the Rivian R1T, the brand is also setting its sights on SUVs. The Rivian R1S is a seven-seat SUV, also fully electric, with which it will also seek its share of the market in the United States.

At the front we can recognise its production sibling, while at the rear everything changes from the A-pillar onward. In this case, we are looking at a vehicle designed for transporting people, which is why the interior space has been carefully considered. As for the options, a varied range of batteries is available, although the most basic version uses a 105 kWh pack and four motors, one at each wheel.

This version has a combined output of 402 CV and 506 Nm of peak torque. In terms of performance figures, this entry-level version can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds and reaches a top speed of 200 km/h. As for range, it can achieve around 385 kilometres on a full charge.

The next step up uses a 135 kWh battery, which delivers the equivalent of 764 CV and a peak torque of 1,120 Nm. The 0 to 100 km/h acceleration drops to 3 seconds and its range reaches, according to the brand, 498 kilometres. The top-of-the-range version uses a 180 kWh battery pack, which offers a power output equivalent to 700 CV, slightly less than the previous one, but in exchange it gains range, reaching up to 660 kilometres. In addition, this version is the only one offered with five seats.

In terms of size, the electric SUV is somewhat shorter than the pick-up, with a length of 5,040 millimetres. It is a little lighter than its sibling, about 20 kg less. Deliveries will begin at the end of 2020, at a starting price of 65,000 dollars, and in principle it will only be available in the two top versions.

Inside, we will find a display that includes the instrument cluster with a size of 12.5 inches and another for the infotainment system measuring 15.6 inches. Occupants of the rear seats will be able to enjoy a 6.8-inch screen. The Rivian R1S will feature Level 3 autonomous driving and aims to bring mobility to an active lifestyle. Will we ever see it in Spain?
