Rolls-Royce tests the Ghost Coupé
This body style will benefit from a steeply sloping roofline that will make it look much sleeker. It will keep the saloon’s engine and will go on sale in 2014.
For a long time now, since Bentley and Rolls-Royce stopped being inseparable, both brands have continued to use identical product strategies. Their ranges are built around two models, from which an ever-growing number of body styles keep appearing. Rolls-Royce will soon stop being the less prolific of the two; if the Phantom has derivatives, the Ghost will also be getting a few.
The model’s new long-wheelbase version will soon be joined by a two-door, which the spy photographers from MotorAuthority have just caught. The test car wears the typical psychedelic camouflage that has become characteristic of BMW prototypes. However, in this case it fails to hide the main difference of this Ghost.
The two-door body will have a very striking sloping roofline that abandons the straight lines prevalent in current Rolls-Royce models. In fact, a C-pillar like this has not been seen since the Camargue, the very expensive coupé the British firm sold in the late 1980s. Likewise, there is a noticeably bulging deflector on the boot lid and slightly widened rear wheel arches.
Although this camouflaged Ghost has four door handles, these are sometimes used as a visual decoy. In other words, it cannot yet be confirmed whether it will have two or four doors. What will certainly remain is the 6.6 V12 engine of around 570 CV from the saloon. MotorAuthority expects a launch date of 2014, just in time to compete on equal terms with the Bentley Continental GT and the upcoming Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupé.
