Sales of electric vehicles by BMW during the third quarter exceed 100,000 units

The new electric model launch strategy of BMW is bearing fruit in 2024. This has allowed the Bavarian firm to surpass by a wide margin its most direct rival, Mercedes-Benz, in sales figures for this type of vehicle.

According to the data released by the company, deliveries of pure electric vehicles from the BMW Group have grown notably during the third quarter of 2024, exceeding those recorded in the same period last year by 10.1 percent. In total, 103,440 battery electric vehicles were delivered across all brands of the group, marking the third-highest quarterly result in terms of deliveries of this type of vehicle for the Bavarian firm.

This high figure for electric vehicle deliveries in the third quarter of the year is not an isolated case, since in the previous quarter the BMW Group managed to put even more electric vehicles into the hands of its customers, with a total of 107,933 units.

However, it is important to note that, while sales of electric vehicles have been very high, those of vehicles electrified with an integrated charging connector -pure electric and plug-in hybrids combined- only grew by 0.1 percent, with a total of 140,065 units. Of this figure, only 36,625 units corresponded to plug-in hybrid models, which makes clear the increasingly lower interest of BMW customers in this type of vehicle.

2024 is turning out to be a good year for BMW

Looking at the year so far, deliveries of electric vehicles from the BMW Group during these nine months have increased by 19.1 percent, reaching 294,054 units. Once again, this growth contrasts with the 6.2 percent increase in sales of electrified vehicles, evidencing a growing preference for fully electric vehicles. Of the sales of electric models throughout this year, 266,151 units were vehicles of the BMW brand, an increase of 22.6 percent.

The good sales of BMW’s electric models contrast, on the other hand, with the drop in the group’s total sales. In the third quarter, BMW’s global sales fell by 13 percent, reaching 540,882 units. The BMW brand recorded a decline of 11.4 percent, while Mini fell by 25.2 percent. Rolls-Royce and BMW Motorrad also saw a decrease in their sales compared with the same quarter of the previous year.

The BMW Group attributes this negative trend, in part, to problems associated with the integrated braking system (IBS) of some of its models -such as the X1, X5, 5 Series and 7 Series- and to market conditions in China, which significantly affected the third quarter.

As for the best-selling electric models, although the company has not provided specific details, it has mentioned that the iX1 and the i4 have been very well received.
