Singer gives the Porsche 911 (964) the style of the 934/5 and tremendous power

Singer is back with a new project based on the Porsche 911 (964), clearly inspired by the 934/5 competition car of the late 1970s

Singer is a company that never stops surprising with its projects, all of them based on the Porsche 911 (964) from the late 1980s and mid-1990s, some of them so spectacular that they have even caused them problems with Porsche. With this latest project they have certainly outdone themselves: the 964 is merged with the 1970s competition 934/5 to result in what they have named the Dynamics & Lightweighting Study (DLS)-Turbo.

To put this project’s uniqueness in context, we need to know that in the 1970s Porsche competed in various FIA championships with the competition versions 934 and 935. Approaching the end of that decade, specifically in 1977, Porsche decided to take part in the IMSA championship with a hybrid of the previous models, which they called the 934/5. The car was later banned even before it could compete in the final race, so Porsche entered it in the SCAA Trans Am Series, where it swept to 6 wins out of a possible 8.

In this way, Singer’s DLS-Turbo aims to reinvent the image of the successful Porsche 934/5 in the air-cooled Porsche 911 (964), still a true jewel for any sports car lover and especially for collectors. In fact, the project is so spectacular that Singer offers a configuration with a more road-oriented look and another configuration clearly built for the track. And when I say configuration, it is because the car can be modified to suit the use you want to make of it at any given moment.

Singer’s task is certainly not an easy one. The donor 911 (964) starts out completely stripped down to the chassis, which is reinforced and prepared so that future upgrades are easier to install. From there, Singer begins to translate the customer’s requirements into the car, which can vary from one project to another, making each one unique while always keeping the DLS-Turbo project’s base in mind.

In this way, in a truly spectacular and beautiful design exercise, the 911 (964) fuses its 1990s design with that of the 934/5, giving birth to the DLS-Turbo. The inspiration from the road version is immediately evident, very similar but with more rounded lines that suit it magnificently. In addition, all the areas that were previously chrome are now painted black, giving it a more aggressive character. Both configurations are clearly differentiated: the front bumper’s lower section is more elegant and less aggressive on the street version and, at the rear, the enormous rear wing of the competition version stands out, which on the road car is replaced by a distinctive “duck tail”.

Inside, sports seats and roll bars are installed. The roll bars also serve as anchor points for the competition harnesses, which can be swapped for more comfortable, conventional ones when driving on the road. Now to the engine, which is similar across the whole DLS-Turbo project: a twin-turbo six-cylinder of 3,800 cc built by Nicholson McLaren Engines, which produces a spectacular 700 CV sent exclusively to the rear axle through a six-speed manual gearbox.

Such power needs to be stopped, and for this a carbon-ceramic braking system is used, fitted behind magnesium wheels with a central locking nut measuring 19 inches at the front and 20 inches at the rear, shod with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 or Cup 2R tyres. An upgraded suspension has also been fitted, which can optionally be replaced with one more oriented to the circuit, with fully electronically adjustable settings.
