Skoda SUPERB iV, the flagship adopts plug-in hybrid technology

The new Skoda SUPERB iV is the plug-in hybrid version of the top-of-the-range model of Skoda

Skoda is being presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show with a range of proposals focused on cars that either do away with hydrocarbons entirely, such as the Czech brand’s first battery electric car, the Skoda Citigoe iV, or use hybrid powertrains, such as the Skoda Superb iV that concerns us here, not forgetting bi-fuel cars that run on petrol or natural gas, such as the Skoda Kamiq G-TEC and Skoda Scala G-TEC.

The new Skoda SUPERB iV PHEV represents the alternative among plug-in hybrid D-segment saloons, marking the partial electrification of one of the variants in the flagship range of the manufacturer.

The hybrid powertrain of the Skoda Superb iV

The Skoda Superb PHEV thus stands out as a powerful vehicle with 400 Nm and a total of 218 CV available, drawn from the powertrain led by the 1.4 TSI 156 CV petrol engine and the 85 kW electric motor, combined with a six-speed DSG gearbox. Thanks to this combination, it keeps carbon dioxide emissions below 40 g/km.

It features a 13 kWh battery, whose range in fully electric mode allows the Skoda Superb iV to travel up to 55 km, according to the WLTP cycle, which will entitle it to the blue CERO environmental label.

The battery of the electric system that powers the car can recharge itself while driving thanks to regenerative braking, or when plugged into a 3.6 kW power outlet.

In this case, the estimated time to reach full charge is 3 hours and 30 minutes, or around 5 hours from a standard 230 V socket.

Installing this energy storage device adds 135 kg compared with the versions without this hybrid technology.

The capacity of the Skoda Superb iV

As the bodywork range for this PHEV will be available both as a saloon, with a boot capacity of 485 litres, and as the Skoda Superb iV Combi, traditionally known as an estate, with a volume of up to 510 litres.

The fuel tank, for its part, has a capacity of up to 50 litres. Skoda estimates a range of up to 850 km when both tanks, petrol and electricity, have been fully consumed.
