SsangYong has registered the names Luvent and Tivoli with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

Last week we saw the first photos of the SsangYong Tivoli, the brand’s upcoming B-segment SUV. However, the model also drew attention that same week for another matter that is perhaps even more interesting, though less widely reported. SsangYong has registered its name and that of Lucent with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, according to Consumer Reports.
The American publication has confirmed through sources at the South Korean manufacturer that the Tivoli, in addition to targeting markets such as Africa, Europe, China and India, was also designed to meet the stringent safety and pollutant emissions regulations of the United States.

As for the name Lucent, Consumer Reports learned from another source that it would be the designation SsangYong assigns to a supposed saloon or compact that will share the same platform on which the Tivoli is based. However, this source is not identified, so this information should be taken with great caution.
The magazine interprets these moves as a possible intention by SsangYong to enter the American market within a two-year period. But it also reminds readers that they guarantee nothing, since the manufacturer has previously registered the names Actyon, Chairman, Korando, Musso and Rexton with that same office, none of which have been sold in the United States.
SsangYong’s current owner, India’s Mahindra & Mahindra, failed in its previous attempt to enter the United States, which ended up in the courts on several occasions due to lawsuits filed both by the distributor that invested in the project and by several of the dealerships that agreed to sell its models.
SsangYong could provide it with more adequate resources to try again as a new stage of its global expansion, although no official information has yet been released.
