Sales of the Tesla Model 3 increased in Spain during 2019, and it became the best-selling electric car in our country, overtaking the Nissan LEAF

2019 has come to an end, and it is time to crunch the numbers to see which model has been the best seller over these 12 months. And when it comes to electric cars, there is one model that has comfortably surpassed the rest and has crowned itself the best-selling electric car of the year. That model is the Tesla Model 3, and we are going to review the reasons why it has earned that honour.

Only three electric models have exceeded the figure of 1,000 registered units in 2019: the Tesla Model 3, the Renault LEAF and the Renault Zoe. Although the second exceeded one and a half thousand registered vehicles with 1,510 units and the third place stood at 1,051 registered units, the Tesla Model 3 reached 1,688 registered units during 2019.

Tesla stands as the best-selling electric car brand in Spain in 2019, and the Tesla Model 3 has become the model that most Spaniards have preferred among those who have opted for an electric car. However, while this model reached almost 1,700 registered units in 2019, the brand’s other two models did not reach 190 registrations. The Model S recorded 175 registered vehicles in 2019 and the Model X 188 units.

What has driven this spectacular take-off of the Tesla Model 3? Tesla is characterised by offering its models with good range, as well as a charging infrastructure that is growing considerably month after month. In addition, supercharger technology is advancing in step with the needs of vehicles, so it is becoming ever easier and faster to charge the battery. In fact, the first Tesla superchargers in the United Kingdom have just been inaugurated, which considerably reduce charging time.

In the case of the Tesla Model 3 there are three versions, starting from the standard Model 3 Plus, which offers a range of 409 kilometres on the WLTP cycle. This version features rear-wheel drive, while the two following ones have all-wheel drive with dual motors. The Tesla Model 3 Long Range allows drivers to cover up to 560 kilometres on a single charge.

The top of the range is the Tesla Model 3 Performance, which reduces range to 530 kilometres but improves efficiency with a higher top speed, raised to 261 km/h, and a shorter acceleration time of 3.4 seconds. Prices, another important factor, start at €49,000 for the entry-level version, rising to €58,700 in the mid-range and reaching €65,300 at the top of the range.

By comparison, the Tesla Model S costs twice as much, reaching €86,000 in its entry-level version, and the Tesla Model X is priced at €93,600. The Tesla Model 3 gives you the technology of a latest-generation electric car, backed by the reputation of Tesla, but at a much more affordable price.

The opportunity to drive a Tesla without a very high outlay compared with its sibling models makes the Model 3 very appealing. It is priced similarly to other electric cars but does not offer the same technology and, above all, the prestige of Tesla.

It is a good reason why it has become the electric car that tops a ranking which we are confident will continue to surprise in terms of sales figures next year and show a more pronounced growth of this type of car.
