The 2018 Rolls-Royce Phantom arrives to raise the concept of ultra-luxury

The model presented at the Rolls-Royce Phantom exhibition has raised the brand’s luxury benchmark and showed us the most imposing car in its range

The exhibition of the finest Rolls-Royce Phantoms in the brand’s history has already begun. A car that represents the very peak of ultra-luxury from this veteran and highly regarded British marque in every era. From the first to the latest, and that is the Phantom VIII, which was the one presented at the exhibition. And we have to take off our top hat before what we have seen. If the previous Phantoms were spectacular, this one breaks with everything we have seen so far.

The Phantom VIII brings several novelties and changes to become a truly spectacular car. On the outside, some aesthetic changes have been made, though very few. Just enough to create a more elegant and attractive look that conveys an image of luxury. The most important changes are found inside. The new aluminium platform allows it to gain rigidity while at the same time reducing its weight. Nevertheless, it remains slightly above 2,600 kilos, due to the technological equipment.

This platform will not be limited to this model; it will also be used in other models and will even accommodate hybrid and electric powertrains. The brand’s next SUV, the Cullinan, will also benefit from this modular platform. The bodywork has been softened and a new grille has been added. Alongside it, new laser headlights have been fitted, capable of illuminating up to 600 metres.

Engine noise has been reduced thanks to the materials used in its construction and the soundproofing of the bonnet. The window glazing has also been improved, with a thickness of 6 millimetres, which means that overall it is up to 10% quieter than the previous model. As for the engine, it has a 6.75-litre V12, similar to the one in the Phantom VII, but with an increase in power reaching 570 CV, compared with the 460 CV of the previous one.

Maximum torque is 900 Nm, a figure reached at 1,200 rpm and transmitted to the wheels through an eight-speed automatic gearbox supplied by ZF. The engine includes two turbochargers, which the previous one did not have, and which have been introduced to make it more powerful and efficient. The suspension is of the Magic Carpet Ride type, whose name already says what to expect: a feeling of riding on a flying carpet, with a smooth and pleasant drive.

And inside, we are going to find everything one can expect from a car of this type. Luxury taken to the extreme, which makes the Rolls-Royce Phantom something very serious and important. What do you think?
