The 4.0-litre V8 engine of Mercedes, star of a promotional video

Mercedes wants to improve its engines and is therefore always looking at what is needed for the powertrains fitted to its cars to feature the best technology and be capable of delivering maximum power while considerably reducing displacement without affecting the thrust they provide. Or rather, so that this thrust improves and becomes more effective. This is the case of the new M178 V8 4.0-litre engine, which is destined to replace the 6.2-litre engine fitted to models such as the AMG, the GT and the C63, among others.
This new engine is, basically, two 2.0-litre A45 engines joined by a crankcase and prepared to work together, balancing their design and creating a single unit that delivers a better result once installed in the car to which they will contribute their power. The compact design has been the main driver behind the new engine’s layout, which has sought the minimum space to achieve the best result.
This M178 V8 engine has been very carefully nurtured by the various teams that took part in its design, development and manufacturing, and every step taken in these processes has been carefully documented. That is precisely what can be seen in this video, which, with the help of the two officials responsible for engines at the brand, shows step by step how this powertrain was developed. It is a curious document that is not seen very often.
That said, don’t expect to see too much, as the secrets of each brand are many and they prefer to keep everything well hidden, so that no other manufacturer dares to try similar things and ends up with an engine that is present, in some way, in the vehicles of other manufacturers. Even so, it remains a curious and very enjoyable document to watch, allowing us to learn better how these engines come together under the bonnets of cars.
