The Alfa Romeo Tonale Diesel is now priced... and it's cheaper than the petrol version

Alfa Romeo opens order books for the Alfa Romeo Tonale with a diesel engine, the powertrain that completes the range of the new Italian SUV, and joins the petrol versions with mild-hybrid technology and a power output of 131 CV or 160 CV. Later on, the Tonale Plug-in Hybrid will arrive, with a system output of 275 CV. The Tonale diesel uses the 4-cylinder 1.6 engine, for which a maximum power of 130 CV and a maximum torque of 320 Nm are quoted.

Diesel cheaper than petrol

A first surprise is that the new Alfa Tonale with diesel engine is cheaper than the equivalent petrol version, even though both engines produce 130 CV and are paired as standard with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, since no version of the Tonale is offered with a manual gearbox. The main reason is undoubtedly that the petrol Tonales come with mild-hybrid technology, which allows them to display the ECO label, while the diesel version qualifies for the C label.

These are the prices of the Alfa Tonale Diesel for the Spanish market, without any campaign, discount or promotional offer:

• 1.6 DS 130 CV Super: €35,600
• 1.6 DS 130 CV Sprint: €38,100
• 1.6 DS 130 CV Ti: €40,600

A direct comparison with the 1.5 petrol Tonale with 131 CV shows that the two entry-level diesel versions, the Super and the Sprint, are €750 cheaper than the petrol one. The Ti trim is not offered with the less powerful petrol engine, so in that case the difference between the diesel and the 160 CV petrol becomes €2,650.

Compared with some of its main rivals, it is more affordable than a Q3 35 TDI Stronic, priced at €38,230, although that one produces 150 CV; it is also available as a Sportback. The new BMW X1 sDrive 18d, also with 150 CV, starts from €40,900.

This engine has particular importance in the Spanish market in the fleet channel; deliveries are scheduled after the summer. For now, Alfa Romeo has already registered more than 850 orders for the petrol versions since the order books opened three months ago, and the first customers are already receiving their cars.
