The AutoPark feature finally arrives for Tesla vehicles without proximity sensors

The software update 2024.2.11 is allowing some drivers to enjoy the Autopark feature on their vehicles without proximity sensors. This update will roll out over the coming weeks to all vehicles of the brand

A couple of years ago, the American manufacturer announced its intention not only to dispense with radar in its vehicles, but also with the ultrasonic sensors that had been used until then to detect the presence of nearby obstacles when performing parking manoeuvres. With this decision, the company wanted to demonstrate its confidence in its Tesla Vision system, based exclusively on the cameras surrounding the vehicle.

Developing the software so that certain functions, such as the AutoPark automatic parking feature, work correctly using only the vehicle’s cameras through Tesla Vision is, however, something that takes time. For this reason, owners of the new Tesla vehicles that have reached the market since then, without parking sensors, have not been able to enjoy this feature that the older, more established models did have.

Now, after a long wait of two years, owners of Tesla vehicles without proximity sensors are finally beginning to enjoy the AutoPark feature thanks to the manufacturer’s latest software update. It can also be said that the wait has been worth it, since the presentation of this feature is far more complete than it was previously on those models that did have proximity sensors.

Easier impossible

As can be seen in the video you will find a little further below, when driving at low speed the vehicle’s screen now shows a bird’s-eye view of the car, also indicating everything around it, whether other parked vehicles, pedestrians or even the lines of the parking spaces. To complete a parking manoeuvre, you only need to select a free space and press the “Tap to Park” button. From that moment on, the vehicle takes care of everything.

For now, the impressions of those owners of a Tesla who have tried it seem quite positive. The automatic parking function, according to most of them, works quite well. With the only complaint that the manoeuvre is perhaps carried out at an excessively low speed. Still, slow and steady wins the race.

Tesla describes the new AutoPark function as follows:

“Your vehicle can now automatically park in designated spaces, including parallel spaces. When driving at low speed, potential parking spaces will be shown on the screen. AutoPark will highlight the one that seems most suitable with a capital P surrounded by a circle, but it is possible to select any other manually.

To start the parking manoeuvre, stop the vehicle and release the steering wheel so that it can move freely. Please note that, as with all Autopilot functions, you must pay attention to what is happening and be ready to take control of the vehicle at any time if necessary.”
