The BMW 5 Series will have a 3-cylinder turbodiesel, and the M5 will offer optional all-wheel drive

Engine downsizing is no longer a recurring theme among the major brands, thanks to the adoption of four- and six-cylinder diesel and petrol engines that are much more efficient than those of previous generations. However, three- and two-cylinder engines are a formula that several models have adopted for cases where very low consumption and ultra-low emissions are required. And the homologation deadline of the Euro 6 standard is approaching (September 2014).
For this reason, BMW has also joined the race for consumption and emissions. Autobild shares some details of the new 5 Series, as well as the M5 and, among them, we see that the German firm is preparing a three-cylinder turbodiesel engine; it is also planned to include all-wheel drive in the M5, but as an option.
Built on a completely new platform, the 5 Series will feature a 150 hp three-cylinder engine, with consumption that is expected to be 3.9 l/100 km. This new engine will arrive with the 5 Series in July 2016, and several months later the Touring and Gran Turismo versions will be presented.
As for the M5, the V8 engine will continue, this time with more power and torque. BMW is reportedly working to exceed 600 hp, paired with an all-wheel drive system that is already known to be optional for the new “M”. This news has landed like cold water on BMW purists who see nothing beyond rear-wheel drive. Considering what their rivals AMG and Mercedes have achieved with all-wheel drive, the Munich boys did not want to lose ground in the battle they are waging with their German rivals.
