With various improvements to both engine power and dynamics, the BMW M2 and M3 Competition stand as the most radical option in their range

Presented last spring and just one month apart, the BMW M2 and M5 with the Competition badge arrived to go all out, and in both cases their power has been increased, in addition to incorporating improvements that update their dynamic behaviour to offer greater doses of fun. Moreover, if we want to add a personal touch, we can do so thanks to the parts created by M Performance Parts.

BMW M2 Competition, a small bullet on the asphalt

Since its arrival in the BMW lineup, the smallest member of the M family has not stopped receiving praise and kind words, and it is a model that has gathered all the good that the BMW M division can achieve, even surpassing, for some, the all-powerful M3 itself. With the Competition badge it puts on its best finery and borrows garments from its siblings’ wardrobe, such as the engine that powers it.

The BMW M2 Competition features its main novelty under the bonnet, adopting the same six-cylinder twin-turbo engine fitted to both the M3 and the M4, but slightly toned down so that it does not outperform its bigger siblings; specifically, it drops from 431 CV to 410 CV. Even so, this still represents a 40 CV increase over the standard M2 engine, allowing it to reach 100 km/h in just 4.2 seconds when fitted with the six-speed manual gearbox.

The BMW M2 Competition easily reaches a top speed of 250 km/h, which can be raised to 280 km/h if we use the M Driver’s Package, although even then this speed is electronically limited. Regardless of its top speed, the M2 Competition has had to use the same carbon-fibre (CFRP) brace located between the front suspension strut towers that the M3 and M4 use, with the aim of giving the whole structure greater rigidity.

Aesthetic improvements aside, all this use of new technology for the M2 will not be cheap, and the M2 Competition will carry a price of 74,700 euros. If you are one of the fortunate few who can afford it, you should know that the BMW dealer network in Spain is already accepting orders for this model.

BMW M5 Competition, because large saloons can also be very sporty

Following the same line as the BMW M2 Competition, the M5 Competition has also arrived, giving this large saloon an even sportier character thanks to the power increase applied to its engine, as well as specific settings for this model that provide better handling in line with the power figures this version achieves. Obviously, all of this is complemented by various aesthetic changes inside and out.

As with the M2 Competition, the changes are hidden. Under its bonnet, the 4.4-litre V8 twin-turbo engine has been tuned to achieve a power increase of 25 CV, now reaching a full 625 CV and a maximum torque of 750 Nm; the new specific exhaust system developed by M Sport also helps achieve this. Its acceleration to 100 km/h takes just 3.3 seconds, while reaching 200 km/h takes only 10.8 seconds.

The dynamic improvements on the M5 Competition are also present and more extensive. Firstly, we find a new specific engine mount, along with a specific chassis that consequently affects other components, such as the suspension, which features dampers 10% stiffer; the rubber bushings have been eliminated and shorter auxiliary dampers have been installed, which provide additional assistance in reducing loads on the wheels.

The only drawback to the BMW M5 Competition is its price: 11,499 euros more than a basic BMW M5, which translates into a price of 148,646 euros for the Spanish market. As with the M2 Competition, the BMW M5 Competition can already be ordered at the brand’s Spanish dealerships.
