The BMW Serie 4 welcomes the second generation of the Gran Coupé version

BMW continues completing the update of the Serie 4, now with the presentation of the Gran Coupé version, which will reach markets in November

Little by little the BMW Serie 4 family is completing the update of its range, and now it is the turn of the Gran Coupé version, a model that, for its second generation, adopts the new look that has generated so much talk since the Serie 4 Coupé was presented, so start getting used to the idea that those new, enormous kidney grilles will also be present on the Gran Coupé version.

More aggressive exterior on a larger size

The new BMW Serie 4 Gran Coupé grows in size compared to its predecessor in every dimension, so that its length now reaches 4,783 mm, its width is 1,852 mm, its height is 1,442 mm and its wheelbase is 2,856 mm, which is 5 mm more than a Serie 3 saloon. This translates not only into extended coupé lines with a more dynamic look, but also into a more spacious interior and a larger boot, as we will see a little later.

As expected, the second generation of the BMW Serie 4 Gran Coupé radically changes its styling to adapt to the brand’s latest presentations and, above all, to the rest of its family. In this way, we see how it features the characteristic and expressive front end, dominated by the new design given to the brand’s iconic kidney grilles, with full-LED headlights as standard on both sides, which can optionally be replaced by adaptive LED headlights with laser light.

It is from the side that we get a clearer view of its handsome coupé lines, with a roofline that drops sharply until it ends at the subtle spoiler on the tailgate. As we already saw on the Coupé version, on the Serie 4 Gran Coupé the horizontal lines dominate the rear, giving it a greater sense of robustness and width, while the sporty touch comes from a rear bumper with aerodynamic lips on the outside. Naturally, we can increase its aggressiveness with the various options offered by BMW as usual, whether through the M Sport trim, the carbon M exterior package or the various M Performance parts.

New interior design and greater comfort for occupants

If we now enter the interior of the new BMW Serie 4 Gran Coupé, it might seem that its design has become simpler. At first glance it has, but we are now faced with a much smoother line design and a centre console that has undoubtedly gained in order. As you can see, the 5.1-inch touchscreen with the BMW 8.0 operating system sits in a higher position and, just below it, the central air vents and the climate control controls, while next to the gear lever is the typical infotainment system controller.

Once seated in the sports seats, the driver will find a digital instrument panel BMW Live Cockpit Plus with an 8.8-inch screen, although optionally you can fit the Professional version, which increases the screen to 12.3 inches, along with the infotainment system screen, which grows to 10.25 inches. On top of all this, depending on the trim level you choose, there are up to 40 safety and driver assistance systems.

In addition, generally speaking, occupants will benefit from greater comfort in both the front and rear seats thanks to the increased size of this new generation. In the rear, the boot capacity now rises to 470 litres, 39 litres more than its predecessor, while if the rear seats are folded down, capacity increases to 1,290 litres, which is also prepared for fitting child seats.

Engines comprising four- and six-cylinder units

Mechanically, from launch the range will consist of two petrol engines and one diesel. The most modest petrol option is the 420i Gran Coupe, which uses a 1,998 cc four-cylinder with 184 CV of power and 300 Nm of torque; followed by the 430i Gran Coupe, which with the same engine produces 245 CV and 400 Nm of torque; while the most powerful option is the M440i Gran Coupe, which uses a 2,998 cc inline six-cylinder with mild-hybrid technology delivering 374 CV and 500 Nm of torque.

The only diesel engine is destined for the 420d Gran Coupé, a 1,995 cc four-cylinder that delivers 190 CV and 400 Nm of torque, and which also uses mild-hybrid technology. All the engines, both the petrol units above and this latest diesel, use an eight-speed Steptronic automatic gearbox.

BMW plans for sales of the new Serie 4 Gran Coupé to begin next November, so we will have to wait until the end of the summer to learn more specific details about its equipment in Spain and therefore its price.
