The first 100% electric Harley-Davidson arrives, and it has nothing to envy from its siblings

The popular American brand makes a difference with this fully electric model, which kicks off the era of sustainable mobility at Harley-Davidson

Harley Davidson Live Wire

When we talk about Harley-Davidson, we think of a powerful motorcycle with a sound that makes us turn around when we sense it approaching. But now, all that power is undergoing a profound change, in step with the spirit of the times. Harley-Davidson has also wanted to enter the electrification market with the launch of the Harley-Davidson LiveWire, the brand’s first model to feature a fully electric powertrain. This is the first motorcycle to use this system, but it will not be the last. Harley-Davidson begins its path toward electrifying its motorcycles with it and hopes to offer a good catalogue of electrified motorcycles by 2022.

Something we miss in a Harley-Davidson stands out. This model has no engine, as is logical. The design, however, keeps the central space of the bodywork occupied. Where the powerful block that would move the motorcycle should be, there is the battery pack that sets it apart from the rest of the American manufacturer’s motorcycles.

Since always, Harley-Davidson has been synonymous with freedom, a lifestyle bordering on the wild and an aggressive character, all wrapped in a kind of brotherhood among the brand’s riders that has transcended borders and social classes. Now the brand wants to go a step further and adapts to new times to keep offering the same thing, but with an electric lifestyle.

The motor is located in the lowest part of the bodywork and will make control easier thanks to the low centre of gravity. No technical details have been given about how the LiveWire works, so we are left wanting to know details such as range, speed and top speed. We know, from what the brand has communicated, that the motor will deliver instant torque and that it will not need a clutch or gear changes, so it will have a smooth and constant acceleration.

Technology to dress a classic

While the chassis of the Harley-Davidson will be made of aluminium, in front of the rider we will find a TFT screen to intuitively control everything needed for a good journey and to connect via Bluetooth to the smartphone. It will also have seven riding modes, three of them customisable, which will vary battery use and travel conditions depending on the choice.

It will be equipped with two batteries. The first will be in charge of moving the motorcycle, while the other, at 12 V, will be dedicated to powering the lights, the TFT screen and the rest of the components. Harley-Davidson assures that all dealerships will have a free charging station for users of the LiveWire, which can also be charged at home if necessary.

And those who sigh to feel the exhaust sound of a Harley-Davidson engine can rest easy. The company says that the motorcycle, although electric, will have a powerful and pleasant sound, which will grow in intensity as you accelerate, although we already see in the video that it will not be exactly the same. A perfect package for Harley-Davidson lovers who want to enter the world of electric motorcycles hand in hand with a brand that offers something more than a vehicle. What do you think?
