Many car brands count among their ranks an iconic vehicle that marked a before and after in the history of the company. Moreover, if those models have continued evolving over time, they become an even more special car. This is something that happens with the Mercedes Class G, a vehicle that has maintained the philosophy of the original from the very beginning.

The star brand is preparing a unique event to welcome the new Class G, which features a series of very interesting changes, both technologically and aesthetically. This new Mercedes model will have a very special welcome, thanks to the presence of the first version of the German off-roader and a few more surprises.

The official presentation, which will take place in Detroit, will be led by the Mercedes 280 GE, the first Class G dating from 1979. But the curious and special aspect does not stop there: the star brand’s 4×4 has been submerged in a block of amber, as if it were a fossil. This model was responsible for creating a historic vehicle, and that is how the brand has chosen to represent it.

The Class G keeps its DNA alive, thanks to engineers still having access to the first version, whose principles remain present in later generations. This is the metaphor the German brand wants us to see, and they have managed to capture it in a very visual way. The 280 GE hid under its bonnet a six-cylinder, 2.8-litre engine capable of producing 156 CV, enough to move the German off-roader without problems.

Today, those power outputs have been increased to unimaginable levels, since the Class G in its previous version is capable of producing more than 500 CV. Despite this drastic change, the 4×4 still preserves that essence that is kept in amber like a dinosaur. The block that houses it has considerable dimensions: 5.55 metres long, 2.55 wide and 3.10 high, more than enough to contain a vehicle as imposing as the Class G.

This was not an easy task, since 90 days were needed to create the block in which this Mercedes 280 GE remains frozen in time. Today we will learn all the details of the new Class G but, without a doubt, the company has managed to generate great anticipation with this spectacular presentation.
