We are turning the pages of the calendar and the year 2020 is approaching, with all the news that will arrive over the coming months in the automotive market. The Hyundai Ioniq Electric has an update ready, and it was in Amsterdam that the Korean company unveiled the final specifications of this model, which made a strong impression when it arrived a few years ago.

The main difference we will find compared with the previous version is the battery capacity. It has gone from 28 kWh up to 38.3 kWh, which increases range by 36% over the previous version. This means the new version of the Ioniq Electric can now cover 311 kilometres on the WLTP cycle.

The battery now comes with a standard Type 2 AC charger with a charging capacity of 7.2 kW, exceeding the 6.6 kW available until now. This means that with the 100 kW fast charger it can reach 80% charge in just 54 minutes.

As for the electric motor that powers this battery, the new iteration of the Hyundai Ioniq Electric keeps the same powertrain as its predecessor. It is the electric motor inherited from the Hyundai Kona Electric, delivering 100 kW, the equivalent of 134 CV. It can also be controlled with the gear lever, so a single touch on it is enough to stop the car without using the brake.

The Hyundai Ioniq Electric offers four driving modes, with ECO+ being the mode that saves the most energy. It can be used to extend range in emergency situations, as it disconnects systems that are not vital for operation, allowing a few extra kilometres to be covered. The remaining modes are Eco, Comfort and Sport, which were already present in the current version.

Connectivity is important for the Hyundai Ioniq Electric, which features the Hyundai Bluelink system. It allows control of car functions such as air conditioning remotely, so the driver finds the car already cooled when they get in. It can also be equipped with a 10.25-inch screen and a five-year subscription to the Hyundai Live Services.

On the exterior, several important changes can be seen, such as a redesigned front end and a rear bumper that has also improved in both looks and functionality. The LED rear light clusters have also been modified, and the 16-inch alloy wheels have been renewed too. The new Hyundai Ioniq Electric will be available in Europe from September, so we will not have to wait long to see it on our roads and in our cities.
