The Hyundai Sonata Hybrid 2020 will feature a sunroof that will extend its range
The Hyundai Sonata Hybrid 2020 will come with a solar roof system that would extend its range by an additional 1,300 kilometers per year.

Following the release of details on its new Active Shift Control technology, ASC, for hybrid cars, Hyundai has presented the first model to feature this innovative gearbox. This is the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid 2020. Based on the latest generation of the Hyundai Sonata, the hybrid model features distinctive design elements, including the cascading grille with crossed openings and the rear spoiler, which is harmoniously integrated with the rear lights.
The aerodynamically styled alloy wheels are also exclusive to the Sonata Hybrid and are said to provide detailed and precise aerodynamics.

Another visible change compared with the conventional Hyundai Sonata models is the solar roof system that makes its debut on the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. The system is capable of recharging the battery to extend range, while also preventing unnecessary battery discharge.
According to the brand itself, six hours of daily charging would give the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid with solar roof an additional range of 1,300 kilometers each year.

Hyundai Sonata Hybrid 2020, here’s how it works
The Hyundai Sonata Hybrid 2020 also stands out as the first model from the brand to feature the new technology called Active Shift Control, ASC. It is capable of reducing gear-shift time by 30%. It does so by applying new control logic software to the hybrid control unit, HCU, which then controls the electric motor to align the rotational speeds of the engine and the transmission.
The benefits cited by Hyundai include better acceleration performance, fuel economy and transmission durability, as ASC minimizes friction during a gear change. KyoungJoon Chang, Vice President and Head of the Powertrain Control Systems Group at Hyundai Motor Group, noted that “the development of the world’s first ASC technology is a remarkable innovation that incorporates precise motor control into the automatic transmission.” “Not only will it save fuel, but it will also provide a more enjoyable driving experience for our customers.”

Conventional hybrid vehicles do not have torque converters to further improve fuel economy, as torque converters lose energy during the transmission process. Although fuel efficient, this system also requires longer shift times to ensure smoother gear changes.
ASC technology allows the hybrid electric motor to also control gear changes by applying new software logic to the hybrid control unit (HCU) to mitigate the issues of slower shift times. The HCU controls the rotational speed of the transmission with a sensor installed inside the electric motor 500 times per second to quickly synchronize the rotational speed with that of the engine.

With synchronization, shift time is reduced by 30%, from 500 ms to 350 ms. This not only improves the acceleration performance and fuel economy of the hybrid vehicle, but also transmission durability by minimizing friction during gear changes.
