The legendary off-roader is renewed, and this is the new, technologically advanced Mercedes-Benz G-Class.

After a long wait, Mercedes-Benz finally presents the new G-Class, far more technological and with reduced consumption thanks to mild-hybrid technology.

Born in 1979, the G-Class of Mercedes-Benz has, over the years, established itself as one of the most robust and sought-after off-roaders on the market. Even so, despite keeping its rugged look, it has perhaps been modernised too much to be considered just a 4×4. For some time it has been a model suitable only for certain wallets, but it remains more alive than ever, especially its most powerful version, which does not abandon its V8 engine.

Mercedes-Benz has taken its time in presenting the new G-Class to the public, but it is finally here, and although it is a continuity design, the changes are visible. Starting with the front, we can see a new design for the front grille, which now has four horizontal slats instead of three. In addition, both bumpers are also of new design, more noticeable on the front one, which now incorporates larger side air intakes.

Turning to the most sporty and radical version, the Mercedes-AMG G 63, it also has unique features. One of them is found in the front bumper air intakes mentioned earlier, where three vertical slats have been added to improve the channelling of air to its powerful engine. Other specific details of this version are the Multibeam LED headlights fitted as standard, stainless steel inserts, as well as black design elements, silver brake calipers and wheels ranging from 20 to 22 inches in size, compared with the other versions, which range from 18 to 20 inches.

Focusing now on the interior of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, the design differences will be minimal, with changes centred on elements such as the side air vents, which adopt a shape similar to the front headlights and can feature illumination. Others include the latest-generation multifunction steering wheel with touch-sensitive controls and Nappa leather upholstery, or the differential lock switches on the off-road control centre. The centre console and driver’s position remain the heart of everything, with the MBUX system and twin 12.3-inch screens, updated to the latest version.

With the Exclusive line, the interior comfort can be enhanced with extended upholstery and equipment that relies on technology, such as the Burmester 3D surround sound system. On the other hand, with the Superior line, the interior can be even more luxurious thanks to new upholstery designs and elements such as the Active Multicontour Seat Plus seat package. Obviously, besides the available packages, there is a wide range of optional equipment and, very importantly, greater customisation through Manufaktur, with its materials, colour combinations and accessories.

As for the mechanical side, the new Mercedes-Benz G-Class will offer lower consumption thanks to mild-hybrid technology of 48 V for all available variants, which Mercedes calls ISG. The range is therefore made up, first, of the G 450 d, a 3,000 cc diesel engine producing 367 CV and 750 Nm of torque; and on the other hand, the petrol G 500, also 3,000 cc, with a power output of 449 CV and 560 Nm of torque. Both gain an extra 20 CV and 200 Nm thanks to the ISG system, and are both paired with a 9G Tronic nine-speed automatic gearbox with torque converter.

At the top of the range sits the massive Mercedes-AMG G 63, which fits a twin-turbo V8 petrol engine producing 585 CV together with 850 Nm of torque, figures that rise by 20 CV and 200 Nm, again thanks to the ISG system. With these characteristics, this 4×4 giant can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.4 seconds and reach a top speed of 220 km/h, although with the AMG Performance package, acceleration drops to 4.3 seconds and the top speed rises to 240 km/h.

Despite these supercar-like figures, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class does not forget its condition as a 4×4 and provides, with its transfer case with reduction gear, greater traction depending on the difficulty of the terrain, thanks to its front and rear differential locking modes. Furthermore, if equipped with the AMG Offroad Pro package, two additional off-road driving modes are added. The G 63 goes a step further by including as standard the AMG Active Ride Control already seen on other sporty models from the brand.

As for availability, specific equipment and price for the Spanish market, we will still have to wait, although to give us an idea, Mercedes-Benz has already confirmed that in Germany it will have a starting price of 122,808 euros.
