Chinese models have revolutionised Euro NCAP safety tests and achieved the top score in the tests.

The Lynk & Co 01 and the Nio ES8 shine in the Euro NCAP tests and earn the top score. These two Chinese models, recently arrived on the European market, have managed to secure the coveted five stars for safety. After testing, their performance has been rated as “impressive” and “excellent”. The Link & Co 01 was launched in Europe last year and has scored 96% for adult occupant protection, along with a very high score for side impacts.

The fully electric Nio ES8 has achieved a good score through its emergency braking system, among other safety assistants. This translates to 92%. The Nio reached the market last July and is already shaking things up. Michiel van Ratingen, Euro NCAP’s secretary general, has said that “a wave of new energy vehicles made in China is under way and will revolutionise Europe”. These are models developed by BYD, Xpeng, Seres and DFSK, among other manufacturers.

“Unfortunately, many of these are still not as transparent to European consumers when it comes to safety. Lynk & Co and Nio, however, show that ‘made in China’ is no longer a pejorative term when it comes to car safety. Here we have two new models, both developed in China, with extremely good performance in our tests.” “It is clear that all manufacturers know that Euro NCAP will examine them in detail if they want to sell cars in Europe, and it is encouraging that they are prepared to make the investment to obtain the best safety ratings.”

The Toyota Mirai, which runs on a hydrogen fuel cell, has also received the coveted five stars, even though the assessors paid “additional attention to front and rear crash safety” of the high-pressure liquid hydrogen tank. This system had no defects, so it is a 100% safe car.

The Audi Q4 e-tron electric also earned the five stars awarded by the safety body, as did the Ford Kuga with plug-in hybrid powertrain. Ratingen explained that “this round of tests highlights the direction the car is heading. All but one of the cars are electrified in one way or another. These models are driven by the need for greater environmental protection.”

“These models feature some of the latest active safety technologies, and this is also part of a trend that has been happening for some time and will continue to save lives on Europe’s roads.”
